John

I object to the very disparaging and denigrating way in which you have referred to Jax and myself in your post ........

"Detective and Porkie Pie and Cynthia and others have spent as much time as me in trying to do work that the 10 or so people in Genes should have been doing. SylviainCanada and Jax have spent a lot of time defending the new layout and the value of chat threads."

The matter of the Chat threads and Boards only became an issue because you were very unpleasant in your references to them back in your first week ........... banal was only one of the words you used. "No place on a genealogical site" was another phrase

I attempted to explain to you the reason why there are chat threads on this site.

I do not defend them ........

...... I was trying to educate someone who was talking out of the side of his head, ad had NO IDEA of what the site was all about.

I've just said to you on another thread ...... an old saying from the area where I was born was ...

"keep tha' trap shut till tha' knows what's goin' on"

you most certainly did not do that re chat threads!!

I also have NOT defended the new layout ............. I've been pretty vociferous re problems with it.

............ as you would know, if you had been active at the Boards before the beginning of August!

Jax is also unfairly denigrated by you ....... as she has also been vocal about problems with the site.

The fact that neither of us is affected by problems with the tree ................ simply because we now do not use the tree function .............. seems to irritate you.

I've said to you elsewhere ..........

........ there are problems with the tree,

........ there are porblems with the layout of the site,

........ there are problems with the colours used.

All should be considered equal .................... and anyone who does not have problems with one or other aspect should NOT fear being denigrated and insulted by any one else.

Your arrogance is showing again :-D

Detective Positive spin, yes. I put farmer on my relatives when they were ag labourers and finished up in Workhouse. I have been on courses when every time you have a negative thought you throw 10p in the glass. And many managers have been taught to spin out company announcements and falsify stats (school truency levels, for example) to make the company or institution look as good as possible. And get more money.

But the new announcement does not need to be: "this site is cr*p, we reply to everything like automatons and follow a script" like somebody has suggested. That would be a Ratner moment and we would all go under.

It coulld be along the lines of:

"Our rollout of the new layout has not received universal acceptance and we need to make slight adjutments that will remove some of the difficulties encountered. I trust you will understand that we have to (remove tree/replace new tree with old tree) for a period of x months whilst fresh testing takes place.

We value the support of you and all our thousands of active members, and assure you we will continue to provide you with a site that is welcoming, has the best search facilities and encourages the exchange of information and views."

When will GR make a comment about the negative views of the new tree? Who knows?

I'd much prefer them to sort out something which addresses some of the issues which are causing dissent, roll them out, and announce at that time why those changes were made.

After all, Gerald Ratner said that the Jewellery his Ratner Group sold was "total cr*p" - and quickly lost his job as CEO and millions off the value of his company.

Its all in the Spin!

If you want this thread to 'die', don't add to it unless in response to a new post. It will eventually get lost in the GR ether.

Sue You have transformed my anger to love in a few minutes this morning. I shall now go out and kick my customers (cf Genes) :-D :-D <3

You don't need to apologise to me as I wasn't offended. And if I want to be bitter - well I will be ;-)

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 3 Sep 2012 10:18

SueMaid If that is my word "banale" that i used over 4 weeks ago, I have drawn a line over 4 weeks ago and apologised if it offended anyone. And I apologise again unreservedly to you and Shaun and others. Please move on, or it will leave you as bitter as a lemon when all I want to be is your tonic.

I did not realise then that the chat thread was not necessaily to do with genealogy at all, and I had never seen the need to chat before.

Banal - commonplace, cheap
Banale - stimulating, interesting, friendly

You can see from my contributions since on various threads that I rather like banale discussions now.

SueMaid Report 3 Sep 2012 10:07

And I think you are trying to wind me up by your comments re Aussies and the Welsh thread :-D :-D

JohnLovesHorlicks

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 3 Sep 2012 10:02

SueMaid You are answering something that I have not recently asked (sheesh). And I think three people have told me (you and ordinary members like yourself and myself) that old tree cannot return. So abolutelly no point in debating that, if they are so certain the Genes tree withdrawl is absolutely irreversible. Waste of Australian electricity and Welsh wind power. I now think you are deliberately ignoring points I have recently made here and are trying to wind me up.

Question that is foremost in my mind is: WHEN WILL GENES MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT THAT RECOGNISES THERE IS SOME UNHAPPINESS ABOUT NEW LAYOUT?

Discussion has moved on. When will you? With your inside track, can you please ask Genes to make an announcement soon. So we all know they are in post and working for and with us as well as Bright Solid.

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 3 Sep 2012 09:44

John - the Gene team will not be doing anything regarding the old tree. They have said that the old tree will not be coming back!!! Sheesh :-S

JohnLovesHorlicks

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 3 Sep 2012 08:55

KenSe Understood :-D But a month is a long long time in politics (or business).

I have worked a 40 hour week through August yet notice I have posted 440 posts!! Not all of them saying how much I wanted old tree back either. I do feel pretty exhaused and frustrated as we still have no significant word from Genes since 2nd Aug.

Detective and Porkie Pie and Cynthia and others have spent as much time as me in trying to do work that the 10 or so people in Genes should have been doing. SylviainCanada and Jax have spent a lot of time defending the new layout and the value of chat threads.

But the Genes team are paid. They are probably very well paid and full time. Where have they been? Surely they cannot have all gone on holiday together till October, as I sarcastically remarked 3 weeks ago. Have spotted that Phil has done about an hours work and so has Estelle in August. Perhaps more, but members haven't seen it. And looking at the aeroplanes landing at London City Airport does not count as work.

KenSE

KenSE Report 3 Sep 2012 08:25

John, there is no need to delete this thread. I don't think Genes have a large staff and with the holiday season and site changes they must have been under great pressure in the last month.

JohnLovesHorlicks

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 2 Sep 2012 23:48

Yes, Cynthia has started a thread already on "Suggestions". Not sure if you have all added your names, but I urge you to do so and give her support.

There are many threads that are anti new tree. This is not one of them. Plenty of differing views here. I seem to be getting most of the stick, for some reason.

I think one or two others have been far more vociferous than me. I think I have been one of the nicer critics of the new tree. At least I have been willing to debate and learn.

And I am prepared to stay on these Boards to help with Welsh genealogical problems and dicuss things like Poverty in the west - both of which have been popular threads recently.

I was going to close this thread yesterday, but I still cannot believe that Genes still will not accept that the feedback is generallty not good. It is making me more and more angry. Do you honestly agree with their Announcement of 2nd August? I know you are all watching what people are saying - many of them have never come on these Boards before.

As responsible members of Genes Reunited for many years (and regular users) we should all be sensitive to this criticism, whatever our personal view about the new layout.

Have you seen Cynthia's thread about people who like and intend to stay on GR?

On this Board.

SueMaid

I must be in the 3% minority then Jax :-\ Maybe I should start a thread about I much I like the new tree.

This is'nt the first time you have asked about the stickied posts John.....or was this just an excuse to bring this thread to the top of the boards again? as you seem to be talking to yourself for the last week.

Maybe the 97% of Genes members who do not like the new tree have now left the building :-D

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 2 Sep 2012 23:11

What about people like me John? I like the new tree and I'm not the only one.

JohnLovesHorlicks

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 2 Sep 2012 22:44

Sue and Wend My problem is a simple one. Officially they say feedback has been good. They have maintained that for over 4 weeks now. There has been some slight criticism of the new layout in certain quarters.

I am as fed up as you about banging on like this. In almost every respect, I feel I am on the same side as you. I want to get on with my life. But I won't stop until they recognise that the feedback is not all good.and communicate that to us members.

That would take them 30 seconds. So far, we have waited for a whole calendar month since they posted this apparent thread that we cannnot even comment about.

KenSE Much appreciate that explanation. I wondered how they had done it. More than that, I wondered why they had posted it on a chat thread if they did not want us to chat about it.
