Which programme do you use on your PC for your family history?

I use Family Historian and now find that the Genes tree is not too dissimilar from FH.

One aspect of the new tree that I particularly like is the list.
Where I have access to others trees that are particularly large I have never been able to find the connections.

Now I can
View other trees, click on lists, put it into alphabetical order and find my family names.
Then all I have to do is click on the person then on immediate family and hey presto find their place in the tree.
Before it was a nightmare trying to scroll up and down and find my relatives in other large trees and many a time I gave up.

BTW my Lloyd family farmed in Brynberian, Pembrokeshire. All my Welsh family were non conformist which has made tracing them a particular challenge.

you were referring of course to the George family.
My George family came from Meline but so far can't find any baptisms. Maybe time to widen the net.


If you haven't already subscribed you may be interested in the Dyfed
thread on rootsweb. It's a particularly interesting site with many very knowledgeable people on there who are more than willing to share their knowledge.

Det - many thanks. You have been a real help, even though we differ in our abilities and opinions (and you will know that I am NOT suggesting my abilities are better than yours :-)

Von - welcome to this thread and I welcome your views. Many agree with me about this new layout. And quite a few are happy with it. No problems there - just that I have not been able to use it. Have tried quite a few times, but it is not the simple tree builder that I sourced 9 years ago. And taking away the old tree has changed my simple routine.

I went on Community to see if there was any anti-new layout comments and if I was the only one who just could not get on with it.

I enjoyed reading the varios threads in teh sub-sections for first time. I though they were all to do with Genealogy, so a thread about Wales would be about the distinctive problems of Welsh genealogy, in my mind. So, yes, to that extent, I felt many of the contributions were what you would find on a social networking site.

Whne it was forciblly pointed out to me that that was not the purpose of Shaun's thread (or indeed any of the chat threads) I apologised for my ignorance as a complete newbie to Community.

And I apologise to you if I have upset you in any way. I do now see the love that the Wales site generates and that is is very important to so many.

Please feel very free to say what you want to me. I really take it all in the right way ie see behind what you say to what you mean.

ps you may be interested that my wife's grandfather had a first cousin who married David Lloyd George. That has taken me down the line of researching D Ll-G's family in Pembrokeshire - near Fishguard, from memory. He was from solid Baptist Pembrokeshire roots, she was from equally solid MC roots in Eifionydd. Her father did not take to the pushy solicitor couting his only daughter. :-)

I don't usually enter into any controversial discussions on threads but I do find your comments on here about the Welsh thread insulting.

Please do not tar everyone with the same brush or judge people by your standards.

I'm sorry you seem to be having so much trouble with your tree which has obviously frustrated you beyond all reason.

I for one really like the new format,don't have any problem with it.
I really can't understand why you can't continue your research as before.
Surely you have your tree on your PC and therefore don't need your Genes tree to carry on researching.

Every one has a different style of writing. When a member new to the boards starts posting on a regular basis, it takes them and the ‘old hands’ time to get the flavour and try to see behind the words to what could be the ‘real’ person.

Although we may read many threads, we often feel more comfortable replying to/on those where we ‘know’ the other posters, and its certainly difficult joining in with a long running thread; the new poster to it probably doesn’t know the ‘back history’ unless they have ploughed through the 100s of pages.

Keep plugging away John. As long as you don’t go out of your way to insult or boast, (pity there isn’t a tongue in cheek icon!) you’ll be accepted.

I decided to have a go on the Wales board, as I had been invited by Sandie, I think, and as I live in Wales . Fun to see what is happening on that thread. Have paddled my coracle into the middle of the river, been particularly nice to them all ( I thought), apologised to Sandie for having an opinion that was not hers. And they are all standing on the banks firing arrows of indignation at me.

What a carry on! But it must be therapy for them to have a hate figure. And they enjoy their mob mentality - making others feel inferior makes them feel better about themselves. And I honestly don't mind being that hate figure if it helps them.

I so wish that Genes could give me a tree format I can work on again, to stop me being so naughty and keep me out of trouble.

But I will really miss some of you (honest), I so look forward to your posts - even when you are teasing me mercilessly - and will peep in occasionally to rub you all up the wrong way :-( ;-)

Charismatic is a very difficult word. I don't know why I have so much of it, dear Kay.

But I stand in the middle of a field, and I am surrounded. I go to an empty restaurant, and it is full within 10 minutes. I go round the supermarket with my valet and other staff and people want to talk to me and get my signature as I exit the checkout.

How very charming of you to ask. But I really don't need to sell myself at all - I am free to any caring owner ;-) :-D

I still cannot get on with this new tree. Yes, I have written. Yes, I have tried to read instructions. Yes, I have adjusted my clothing, brightness, everything else. Yes, I have most up to date bruiser. Yes, I do like moaning. Yes, I am a saddo. Yes, I am patronising, dear little ones. Yes, I know Genes have said...

But I am almost perfect (still working on this fault of false modesty). Yes, I am so intelligent sometimes I wonder if my head will burst - and if that Stephen Fry continues to phone and ask me questions, I shall consider it to be harrassment. I probably know more about genealogy than anybody else in the world - I can easily connect all of you to Genghis Kham if you give me your star sign and when you last had a visitation. And I am so charismatic and good-looking, I sometimes wish I was fat and ugly just to divert attention.

But humble. You don't know the meaning of the word. I still sometimes think there is even more to learn before I pop my Tyrwhitt Oxford brogues.

Susan, it is one of the nicer qualities about regulars on Chat...they are very adept at turning a potentially ill-tempered thread into a pleasant one :-)

Just as long as you don't get any visitation from me, Sue. It will uplift you too much to meet someone so nice and charismatic. Usually people are tongue-tied in my presence, and need something to calm them down afterwards. Better I just keep you in my thoughts today again.
