Susan Report 6 Aug 2012 09:40

Here we go again some bright spark with nothing better to do with there time than reporting a perfectly good thread to discuss the changes in Genes.

I don't think Genes themselves would have done it as they want us to comment on what works and what does not.

John you sound like you could help out on the boards ...you would be very welcome to join in.
sue

Edit

Suemaid I did not find John's comments patronisingat all ,I think he is correct alot of us did like the slimpicity of the site I am one of them as I was not brought up with computers ...not around in my day and it has taking me a long time to learn how to work them.
It will take me a while to work out the new tree but I will do it ...in time that is :-D

Susan

Have had a go with the thread on Genealogy chat about "Maria BRANSON" born c 1812 who married George POOL, a weaver of Haverhill, in 1830.

Enjoyed helping immensely and hope between a number of us (Rollo, Chris etc) we can help to get a breakthrough of a brick wall which seems to have been there for over 4 years.

No real idea what is significance of RR as I have not written much before this old tree disappeared, but it sounds as if somebody important is taking notice. Good for them.

Somebody has reported your first comment as offensive in some way, John. Why I don't know.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 6 Aug 2012 09:57

John, a little question and others.

If when you had first joined GR and the tree format was as it is now would you have complied your tree into that programe or just not bothered to have a tree on this site because you didnt like the layout?

;-) ;-) :-D

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 6 Aug 2012 10:10

Kay

I looked round for easiest and best valuet tree at the time. I found the GR tree in Feb 2003 when I joined to be wonderful in comparison to others and it suited me very well. It ticked almost all boxes.

No, I don't think I would have joined GR nearly 10 years ago if their tree had not been so simple and so user friendly. I woud have almost certainly have rejected this new tree format.

On reflection, I would have liked to contribute to the chat a bit, because I used to like RootsWeb chat a lot. So I feel I have missed out there. But the past is the past (deep philosophy :-))

I have had my tree on here since 2006 and I did like the old tree,it was simply to use and easy on the eye ,I realise we do have to improve all the time and go forward but it is harder as you get older.

I think in time they will sort it out ...it just may take a bit of time as it did the last time they changed everything :-D

I picked a bad time to get both my eyes operated on and my glaucoma does not help either....the sun glasses do though :-D :-D :-D.

John, The report button is their to report breaches in T&C but sadly some very unimportant people tend to use it to try and get a reaction, Sadly that is one part of the boards that gets abused by a tiny minority

GR them selves don't report threads, If the see anything worthy they would just delete the thread and issue a warning to that member in an email

I'm sure once GR review the thread it will be reinstated

Sue - I guess offence is in the mind of the beholder:-)

JohnLovesHorlicks

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 6 Aug 2012 10:44

I really have quite a clear conscience and, if I offend someone (which is rare) I apologise but hope the aggrieved person looks at themselves. But, hey, we all have bad days and good days and can some days take offence because our grass is growing so quickly. I think it is good that someone has RR'd one of my posts - at least it shows they care.

I have found very little rudeness on this site, even though opinions have been quite polarised this last week or so. And I know I am never rude - though I do write/speak my mind.

Yes, offence may be in the mind of the beholder. And beauty is in the eye of the beholder - thank goodness for mirrors, otherwise no one would say how beautiful we are.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 6 Aug 2012 10:46

John........But being new back in 2003 you wouldnt possibly have known any different tree format, if you had never used a tree programe, you would have grown up with it..
:-D :-D ;-) ;-)

I have a Tree Maker CDRom with lots of data on it............dated from 1996!!! mind it needs win95/98 to read it now..even the old floppy i with some tree on is redundant.....mind it will flumax the gt gt gt grandkids on how to work them....... ;-) :-D

Kay

I looked at loads of tree builders at the time, spent quite a lot of money on Platinum this and Gold that. There were tree builders available from earliest days.

But I never really transferred my hard copy (built up since I started in 1981) to any computerised system till I found the GR site in 2003. And, like most of us, I have loved the site (at about 90% level of fun) ever since. Till BNT day last week - Brave New Tree :-D

ஐ+*¨^¨*+e+*¨^¨*+ஐ Mildred Honkinbottom Report 6 Aug 2012 11:09

I think, this site has come a long way since I joined in 2003.

For those who posted on the boards back then it was like the stone age back then, and without progress you wouldn't have had the means to chat & share the way we do on here now as a community.

If the site didn't progress as new ideas & technology dictates by updating, people would still moan.

I've seen this site reincarnate several times, in bits and as a whole. Yes there have been faults along the way, but there has also been some good changes too.

Each time, true faults aside, there have been an outcry by people who dont like the layout / look/ colour/ cant find this or that (or dont want the effort of finding this or that) etc etc.

Quite often a few years down the line, when another change is implemented, some of these people praise the old look etc to the heavens & desperately want it back - and so the cycle continues. ;-)

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 6 Aug 2012 11:15

I've noticed that the GR team have swapped "Messages" and "Community" around.....sigh.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 6 Aug 2012 11:26

Dont mention when the flock came in Mildred ,,,,,,,,,the outcry brought tears to your eyes as people used the old ------" I dont like I'm not renewing it hurts my eyes to look at the screen, its giving me a headache, and me belly hurts".etc,,,,,

it was only a couple of months ago the outcry about tree's on here was almost deafing and a daily moan and groan,

I have been using a few sites tree formats and did one on FMP last year found it ok. they all work different from each other but havnt found any hard to get to grips with.....

JohnLovesHorlicks

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 6 Aug 2012 11:40

Mildred

I have loved most of the changes since 2003. Yes, it is sometimes like a new car and learning how to use new fizzers and whizzers. Like cruise control and dual fuel.

And the flock wallpaper was horrible - apologies if you have it on your wall. And I moaned, moaned, moaned - but not enough to complain formally. Just felt sorry for the progarmmer who thought it was an improvement.

I am sure Genes will hope this will blow over after all our moans - moans about new tree, moans about so many moaning about new tree, moans about those who are moaning about moaners.

I think there is a very simple and cheap solution to keeping us all happy and working together. Personally, I don't think any of this was necessary at all.

But I am pleased I opened up this thread, which GR started but did not give us any option to comment on their "positive" but I thought "unrealistic" spin on this change.

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 6 Aug 2012 11:44

Unfortunately John - and I do hope it doesn't happen - if GR uphold the RR'ers complaint the whole thread will go. That will be a shame.

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 6 Aug 2012 12:45

Sue, If which i doubt GR do uphold the RRers complaint i for one will complain to GR about that decision

Genuine threads for debate about any subject are just that this is the General Chat Board and to remove this thread would IMHO be in breach of our right to freedom of speech

Roy

Edit, I personally think that Jonesey's idea should at least be debated but i am in favour

I have a suspicion it might be the title - it is identical to the 'official' one and could be mistaken for such if the OP wasn't read properly.

For those who are new to using the boards, which are now apparently called Forums....

We all Post on a Thread to reply on it.
A Thread is a discussion on a particular topic
The first post on a new thread is the Opening Post (OP)
We can send Private Messages (PM) from the thread to someone else who has posted by clicking on their name or the Send Message button under their avatar (picture or silhouette)

The Report function used to be called Request Review, so more established posters tend to still abbreviate it to RR.

:-D

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 6 Aug 2012 13:32

Detective, I take your point to mean that the RRer thought this was a duplicate thread?

You do not need to open and read the OP to see if it was a duplicate

This thread appears with the thread author as John where as the Genes thread appears as author Genes and stickied to the top of the board ( clearly two separate threads )
,
We have had this problem for some time now and until the system changes this will continue to happen

If a RR is justified then the RRer should have no fear in posting that they reported it and why

I have in my 8 years only felt the need to report posts/threads on abt 4 occasions and i have as do others stated it was me and my reason for reporting it on the thread,

This anonymity given to people who RR a thread has lead to that facility being used as a form of abuse without having to be identified

That is plain wrong

John, did you look at the Help Clinic? Just wondered what you thought of it.

Tabitha, I just went over to my tree, clicked on another person's tree - went to Search and put the name in and submitted it. Voila - there is the person I wanted on that tree. Is that what you mean?

When I want someone in my own tree, I simply do the same and they appear straight away. :-S :-S
