Yes, I remember Sealyhams. There were lots of lovely breeds 50 years ago that no longer seem to be very popular. I see loads of these wrinkly Japanese dogs - Sharpei, I think. And Huskies. And Staffies. And Chihuahuas (or are they cats?). And Bichon Frisses

Which ones are endangered apart from Sealyhams. Do you see those Chows now with the blue tongue. Or Bedlingtons. Or collies. Or proper poodles (the big ones). Great Danes? Irish Wolfhounds?

I have a sealyham he is 12 but has done blind since living here he seems to manage ok and still has his naughty ways they are great dogs but are an endangered breed now with less than 60 pups registered with the kennal club last year even the best of breed this year came from Canada I do hope we dont lose everyone should have one

It must be so difficult when you move to a place (however beautiful) and know nobody at all. Loneliness is a terrible thing, and nodding to neighbours and passing time of day is no substitute for friends you have known a long time that you really trust :-)

Although none of us admit to actually living in Birchington, you can see that many have fond memories or live close by.

Apart from childhood visits to the beach, my parents retired to Westgate but enjoyed shopping in Birchington as a change. OH's grandparents also retired there in the 1960's, but moved back to NW Kent. I think he found it too peaceful!

I dont live in Birchington either, but I used to know the town (or village?) quite well, as my family holidays there several years running ... many moons ago. We stayed in a guest house that was in Beach Avenue.

I remember the Ice Cream Parlour near the station, and the Bungalow Hotel, and the Cliff Top Hotel (now gone, and replaced by a housing estate). I remember when the promenade from Grenham Bay/Epple Bay didnt run the full length of the cliffs to Minnis Bay; and also the cliffs before the cave entrances were cemented over. I bought a pack of playing cards from the Woolworths that used to be along the high street. There was a pet shop there, with a Mynah bird that whistled all the time and one day an old lady passing by thought it was Dad whistling at her and she gave him a filthy glare LOL. In the evenings after dinner, Dad always insisted we walk to Minnis Bay then walk along to Reculver. We always slept well, at Birchington!

used to live in Broadstairs moved here last year but dont know anyone

the fairy on my Christmas tree come from there i do love that shop

they did beautiful sausages

Kev had Harvey's bar he took his ex Jackie to Australia
and she died in a awful accident where they all nearly drowned she was a lovely woman
she once said to Me after we leftand went back for a wedding
Joy we have never had a flat left like that i took offence and said cheeky mare
i even polished inside the wardrobes and drawers before i left that flat
she said exactly what i meant
everybody else trashes them but you left yours as if you had just popped out
mind i did i even set the table and left wine for the new tenant and a welcome card :-D
i loved that flat and wanted the next person to love it to
I used to sit on the veranda on a night looking over the marina and watching the night life

There's me assuming Illusions was a club. You have such clear memories of place, Joy.

Noticed that Bill Grimsey (ex MD of Focus, Wickes, Iceland) commented on death of High Streets yesterday. Blamed internet shopping and high business rates. But free parking in out of town shopping centres must be a bigger factor. Wonder how Birchington has changed over years.

Personally, I love to shop in those old fashioned towns where you can walk round interesting shops. Locally, Cowbridge is nice, so is Hay on Wye. But few and far between now. :-(

it was in the high street sold Christmas lights and nick knacks

when i was last there a worker from the drug company at sandwich
fell out the pub window in his sleep and died that was on the high street to
their was a lovely meat shop over the road from the pub

JOHN I went to Kent for a week end and stayed a year those were the days
We rented Harvey's bars flat in york street
shared our yard with 3 pubs Tescos was over the road
and they had to drag me kicking an screaming home at the end of that year
i loved it so much :-D :-D

No chance of painting the town red in Broadstairs then, Joy :-( :-(

So few of these clubs seem to be left today anywhere. Certainly not from when I was young(er). New ones appear in their place often.

Most town centres have changed beyond recognition when you go back to places:-) Butchers and post offices replaced by tanning salons and kebab shops.

My, you are sharp tonight John. It took me a good ten minutes before realising you weren’t being rude to Cynthia ;-)

As Sealyham hasn’t come back, may be she is a Sunday night poster. That means we may have to wait another 6 days until our curiosity is quenched.

Please, if anyone is helping her off-board, do put us out of our misery!
