DET Now I know where you started life. Would have been a quiet and private alcove years ago, no doubt :-D

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 1 Oct 2012 09:14

Lol- no, SE London/NW Kent 7-8 years after you. It was suggested that I should train as a Librarian, but didn't want to go away to College. Strange reasons for the life choices we make.

That area of the Kent coast was the day trip of choice, and a popular retirement destination - which is what my parents did....and OH's grandparents! In the crowded SE, it does still have a village feel and a much slower pace of life.

Couple that with the Ancestral roots being on Sheppey - many of whom 'escaped' across to the mainland

JustJohn Report 1 Oct 2012 09:22

DET How can you be so certain of conception in Bromley? It may have been Margate Library. Mind you, I wasn't there either :-D

On rare occasions I have been to Sheppey, the entrance looks a bit like a portcullis. Is my memory playing tricks with me? Is Minster the big town? Quite nice. And a resort called South something the other end?

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 1 Oct 2012 09:36

Can't think of an area you are refering to John. The 'big town' on Sheppey is Sheerness although historically it was in the parish of Minster. How about Canterbury - that still has a medieval air to it with an ancient wall and gates

There isn't (to my knowledge) a place beginning with South. Are you thinking of Southend, in Essex?

And I didn't say Bromley.....my parents were too straight laced to do anything intimate other than in the comfort of their own home ;-)

JustJohn Report 1 Oct 2012 10:22

Like myself, you will probably have been a sad disappointment for your parents. Wouldn't describe mine as straight-laced, but I do know my grandma did not see a banana till she was 25!!! But we strive to be someone our parents would be proud of.:-D

The bridge that looks like a castle portcullis with drawbridge is, I think, called the Kingsferry. Used to put the willies up me as I approached. The resort might be Leysdown, though I think there may be another place nearby with South in name. Just remember driving a long way to get there and it was a small place - and I definitely didn't get wet.

And yes, it is Sheerness not Minster. Sorry. Remember Tesco buying a small group of supermarkets (about 1980) and one of them was in Sheerness :-D

Hope this thread is all valuable info for OP :-S

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 1 Oct 2012 10:46

Been trying to find links to the Kingsferry bridge - the only images that seem to be around are for the one opened in 1960.....which may be too late for the one you remember....not that I doubt your memories.

It was/is pretty ugly, but probably a good example of the architecture of the period. When I’ve visted for FH reasons in the last few years, I’ve belted down the M2 and used the Sheppey Crossing opened in 2006. It does have the advantage of not having to be raised to allow large vessels to pass underneath!

And nearly 16 hours later, Sealyham. has npot come back to the thread. Wonder what he/she wanted to know.

Julia in Derbyshire

JustJohn Report 1 Oct 2012 10:54

Whatever Sealyham wanted to know, it will be here on this thread. Not only where we all were born, but how we were conceived and the process :-D

Nothing like the scattergun approach. One of us is bound to have hit the bull :-D

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 1 Oct 2012 10:56

Perhaps we've frightened sealyham off?? :-D

S/he posted another thread last night, with serious answers

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1311551

Although Sealyham has a number of posts to their name, maybe our Cyns needs to send one of her billet-doux?

edit - using quick search, she seems to have had a break from the boards since 2008. Look up ones more (May and September 2012) recently haven't had a reply from her either.

2nd edit - not enough threads to account for the number of attributed posts - may be she was aka something else?

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 1 Oct 2012 11:01

This thread is all very serious as well. I have been chased by a Sealyham, so would not do anything to frighten him/her off :-( :-(

Hope h/she doesn't come back with "my relations were involved in a major accident which wiped out many in Birchington in 1943". Then I will feel really bad :-( :-(

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 1 Oct 2012 12:58

DET and I could be related. My maternal links are Medway and Sheppey :-D

Billet-doux going to Sealyham as we speak!

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 1 Oct 2012 23:05

Cynthia Are you sure you didn't send a Sealyham to Billet-doux?

Was your mother born on a golf course in Kent, then? :-S ;-)

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 1 Oct 2012 23:37

Maternal links……(links) on a golf course…..

My, you are sharp tonight John. It took me a good ten minutes before realising you weren’t being rude to Cynthia ;-)

As Sealyham hasn’t come back, may be she is a Sunday night poster. That means we may have to wait another 6 days until our curiosity is quenched.

Please, if anyone is helping her off-board, do put us out of our misery!

ILLUSIONS OF KENT LTD, decorating contractor, painting (Yellow Pages). Still open, Joy :-) That must have been a very exciting night out for someone from Middlesbrough ;-)

Choccy

Choccy Report 2 Oct 2012 07:00

Joy - if you mean Illusions in Broadstairs High Street, it isn't there any more.

As for the Wing family, I've not heard of them.

Shame Sealyham hasn't come back - it would be nice to know what she wanted!

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 2 Oct 2012 08:21

Chucks golf ball at John. Tuts.

I have sent a message to Sealyham but, as yet, it remains unopened. :-(

We wait with bated breath.

;-)

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 2 Oct 2012 08:24

No chance of painting the town red in Broadstairs then, Joy :-( :-(

So few of these clubs seem to be left today anywhere. Certainly not from when I was young(er). New ones appear in their place often.

Most town centres have changed beyond recognition when you go back to places:-) Butchers and post offices replaced by tanning salons and kebab shops.

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 2 Oct 2012 08:49

yes Choccy
it was in the high street sold Christmas lights and nick knacks

JOHN I went to Kent for a week end and stayed a year those were the days
We rented Harvey's bars flat in york street

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 2 Oct 2012 09:01

There's me assuming Illusions was a club. You have such clear memories of place, Joy.

Noticed that Bill Grimsey (ex MD of Focus, Wickes, Iceland) commented on death of High Streets yesterday. Blamed internet shopping and high business rates. But free parking in out of town shopping centres must be a bigger factor. Wonder how Birchington has changed over years.

Personally, I love to shop in those old fashioned towns where you can walk round interesting shops. Locally, Cowbridge is nice, so is Hay on Wye. But few and far between now. :-(
