I remember there was a mens public urinal just underneath the bridge. Brown tiles on the outside I seem to remember.

Someone had written a rude word outside it, and of course, as a kid, I wanted to know what it meant. And asked.........................very loudly!!

BBC1 9.0p.m The Prisoners - tonight it's Pentonville & Holloway.

I had an Uncle who was aprison officer there, and one of the prisoners bred budgies, I had two from him, I called the Andy & Flo, from Andy Capp :-D

I also had one on the inside Susan, and more in other "establishments" elsewhere :-D I've also visited a few, not nice :-(

I can remember before the 'new' prison was built. It was a grey stone place with a facade replicating Warwick Castle. A bit forboding place.

I can remember walking back from Holloway Odeon one night wiv me fella, and he walked us up to the door of the prison. He said he had walked me home, and was going!

Thanks Lynda, missed this posting yesterday but found the program on IPlayer today and watched it.

I lived in the flats next to Pentonville up to the age of eight. As did many of my extended family. One of my aunts lived in the block overlooking the prison wall and I can remember looking out her living room window and seeing the prisoners walking round a circle in the prison yard. This was probably the only exercise they got back then.

Years later I heard from my mum that a prisoner had escaped over the wall during the time we lived there and ran in to the block where we lived. The story goes that he was given shelter by one of the neighbours who felt sorry for him and supplied him with clothes belonging to her soldier son. So he got away.

During the film a saw a glimpse of the red brickwork of those flats and it did take my memory back there !

Remember when Myra Hindley was taken to Holloway. There was great uproar.

Don't know much about Pentonville though.

Had a friend whose Dad was a warder at Holloway.

Glad you saw the programme Jo, lovely to see places we know on TV, the flats look the same today as they did in the 50's :-D

MG whenever there was any bother at either the Ville or Holloway, the news travelled fast to locals. I remember when there were hangings at either Holloway or The Ville, on the hour of the hanging, everything stood still, and heads were bowed. I can still feel how it felt, I think that is why I am against capital punishment, I was too near it when it happened :-(

I think because I lived so near, I never really took any notice of the comings ad goings there, I've visited quite a few a few prisons, and when it's visiting time, you see loads of people walking the same route at visiting time, never saw that there, maybe because there's a bus stop outside, and people didn't have to walk:-D

I really enjoyed the Prisoners programme, it makes a change to see people making an effort and stop offending, and hopefully go on to make a decent life.
Usually they show those who keep offending, and keep going back again and again. Thought it quite uplifting :-D

When Myra Hindley was in prison I was out with a couple of friends one night which ended with a lock-in at pub in Holloway Road.

There was a bit of a discussion at the bar regarding this criminal and I made my feelings very clear at what punishment she deserved. One bloke kept asking why I had such strong opinions .............

It was shortly after that I found out that he was Lord Longford who campaigning for Hindley's release.

I believe the last woman to be hanged at Holloway was Ruth Ellis. How the law has changed, it would now be classified as a crime of passion, and maybe the sentence would have been a bit more lenient.

It is now a red brick building, with a tiny sign denoting it is a prison. The bus conductors used to refer to it as Holloway Ladies Rest Home!!!!!

Just seen on Thames News, there is a new Museum of London, with an exhibition of painting, photos about the Thames Estuary.

Free entry, but did not catch where it is situated. Not the one at London Wall, it looked like on the Thames somewhere.

Anyone know where it is?
