it is ...................... I love Thanksgiving, and it is such a "free" tradition .......... freedom from buying gifts, from being obligated.


and everyone is usually very happy on the day .............


...... those family rows just do not seem to happen!

When i looked up ecards to send to "friends" in Canada........they all had "Thankyou" printed on the front.........

Thankyou for this and thankyou for that.

And i thought.............isn't that lovely that all you need to do is just say "Thankyou" to someone, for whatever reason..........without all the added pressure of "Gift Giving" as you do at Christmas time.

I thought it was an honest question. I did not know, so I asked. I was told to google. I did. Loads of stuff on google but didn't really understand how important it was.

Thankfully, I now know what it is all about.

Not sure where else it happens


It is the BIGGEST family happening in the year ................. people will make every effort to get back home at Thanksgiving, while they may not go "home" for Christmas or Easter.


I'm not sure where you managed to read that it is a 3 day festival ............. because it is not.


In Canada, Thanksgiving is the 2nd Monday in October, and people always used to have the meal on Monday.

These days, more people have it on Sunday, leaving Monday free for other family happenings ........ we've always had the meal on Monday.


In the US, Thanksgiving is the 4th Thursday in November ..... and people do make a long weekend of it, so they can go home for a decent length of time.

They have the meal on Thursday, and then the Friday is the biggest shopping day for Christmas



No-one is left alone on Thanksgiving, unless they want to be alone.

We used to invite friends, and check that no new graduate students in OH's department was alone.

The charities always put on meals for the homeless, and poverty stricken.



In many ways, it is a more honest tradition than Christmas and Easter have become ......................... more concerned with family and friends, and giving thanks for what people have, as against gift giving.

Sylvia Honestly wasn't being rude. Ignorant yes. Google told me it was a harvest festival - bringing crops in safely etc.

Never heard of Thanksgiving before, and was not sure with pumpkins it was not an early Halloween. So just trying to learn.

Had not picked up that it was firstly a thanksgiving for a safe delivery across the pond by Frobisher. It therefore stretches back over 200 years BEFORE the UK started celebrating the harvest.

Sounds great fun, anyway. :-D Is it just USA and Canada tradition?

Thanks we ate all the pies yesterday and lay around all day today recovering =0)
Like Sylvia we had roast turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, roast carrots, roast sweet potatoes (see a trend here?)and lots and lots of cranberries oh and lots of homemade gravy from scratch. Apple pie and pumpkin pie to follow with ice cream.
Then we'll do it all again for Christmas by which time we might be hungry again.

we had a super Thanksgiving!

weather was beautiful, warm and sunny. Lots of turkey, cranberry sauce, and candied sweet potatoes. OH had pumpkin pie, I'm lactose-intolerant and so can't eat it. Just have to watch him


I always find it interesting to note that the first Thanksgiving was a thanks giving for surviving the crossing of the Atlantic by Sir Martyn Frobisher in 1585

then Samuel de Champlain held the first annual Thanksgiving dinner in New France (John ...... that was the name for part of Canada in those days) in 1604.


The first American Thanksgiving was in 1621


....... well after the Canadians :-D :-D :-D


I'm always naughty, and point that out ......... they don't like not being the first :-D :-D :-D :-D

It says Thanksgiving is a 3 day Harvest Festval on google. Is that right? We have tomatoes and cucumbers for our harvest festivals. :-S Why can't we have pumpkin pie?
