Saw an interesting programme last night with Nigel Slater looking into the history of sweets.
What was your favourite sweets as a child, or now, and do they bring back any particular memories.?

I used to love sherbert, of any sort, reminds me of summer days long ago.!

I too liked sherbert lemons but they don't taste the same to me now. Also liked sherbert dabs/fountains. I also like the coffee creams Joy.

Used to love Milk tray chocs and my Mum always bought me some but they are not the same these days.

Even things like mars bars don't taste as nice since the healthy eating brigade got them changed.

For a real trip down Memory Lane, you can´t beat the sweetie shop at the Black Country museum in Dudley.

I think the place Nigel Slater was born was Wolverhampton , and it may well have been that same sweet shop he visited. It was pretty spectacular if it was,.
Pity that sort of thing seems to be disappearing now.!

That´s interesting Sue. I didn´t realise that.
It really is a wonderful place & the chippy on the same site is not to be missed.
(the museum is interesting too)

I used to love Choc Sticks, a long twisted stick of brittle toffee with a core of chocolate. If anyone knows where you can buy them.......
Also have a thing about coltsfoot rock, but it has to be a whole stick, not chopped up.

I watched some of that but he came across as rather creepy, I thought.

Yes, there is something a bit creepy about Nigel Slater, glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. Much prefer the Hairy Bikers (but I am a prejudiced Geordie)

The sweet I remember most from way back is liquorice root. Could chew away for hours. Not long ago I went into one of those old sweet shops and bought some. It was disgusting!!!!!

Mum used to make us paper cones containing cocoa powder and sugar. Imagine kids having that now.

Banana Toffees were pretty good, and Gobstoppers. We,ve got a local shop that makes all types of old sweets.

GinN

GinN Report 6 Nov 2012 14:11

Back to jelly mushrooms with peanuts on their bottoms - I think you may be remembering birds nests, the peanuts being the eggs.

We had sweet rations until I was 8 years old. Lost me sweet tooth after that. Must have had a deprived childhood. LOLOL
