It sounds like the same happened to my father. I gather he was captured in Ceales - France and then joined the Polish Army. I will get in touch with the German Government Agency and see if they have any record.

This happened to my late father

He had said he had been captured by the Germans in 1943 and forced to work in labour camps. He ended up in Boulogne in 1944 when the garrison was captured by the Canadian army and he was brought over to England as a German POW. but given his nationality was immediately enlisted in the Polish Re-settlement corps.

However we only found he was actually a conscript a couple of years ago when we sent for copies of his British Service Records. With them we received his German Army Paybook which they had held for all these years.

In his wallet he had a metal dog tag but was always a bit cagey when we asked him what it was for. I now know that it was his German army tag and its number matched exactly the reference in his Paybook.

I understand that there is a German Government Agency called the Deutsche Dienststellewhich maintains records of members of the former German Wehrmacht. It might be worth looking at their website.

Can anyone give me some ideas where to look for info on Poles that where forced to join the german army.

Also info. on the capture of soldiers in Ceales in france
