I love the Indian speaking ones especially when they ask for the previous person who had this phone number and they moved 11 years ago.

Certain a lot of these types of calls are random generated numbers.

I got one at 9am, when I was off work sick.
I wasn't a happy bunny and to be awoken from my slumbers by a cold caller wasn't the best thing to happen.

I think it was PPI - which I'd already claimed myself!

I'm afraid they got an earful including crying and very snotty sniffing. In the end they apologised to me and rang off :-D

Not had any PPI cold calls since.

I don't answer the phone at the house unless a number I recognise comes up.

My answer phone message says:

"If you are a nuisance caller your number has been logged and you will be reported to the relevant authorities.

If you are family, friend or genuine contact please phone the mobile or leave a message and we'll call you back*

Then the call logger displays a number and you google it and add your complaint.

Our latest one is from 0301, four or five times per day.

These companies do not take a blind bit of notice of the TPS and gaily start their dialler software as soon as they get into the call centre.

I have mentioned to OH that I will answer a couple as a 'bogus solictor's office' :-D
or perhaps even 'the palace of Westminster' or 'twlightlight care home for the bewildered'. Even that would probably not shut them up!

I did respond to someone asking for a Mrs.******* and told them she was dead! They then said they could speak to me!

I loathe them with a passion.

I'm registered with TPS also am not listed with BT ,but I still get them, anytime from 12 noon onwards.

We don't have Caller Recognition ,but think we may invest in it.

Hubby is semi retired now and often picks up the calls, if there is a pause following him answering ( generally is with overseas call centre callls ) he hangs up straight away.
My sis lives abroad , but there is no delay in her replying to me when I answer the phone,so we know we don't hang up on her,she phones after 6pm usually.

I'd like to know where they get the number and name from, they often ask for my dau ( she has an unusual name),She never gives our home number out,she always uses her mobile number.
We've also opted out of the Electoral Register 'system' that supplies details to 3rd parties since the scheme began.
I think I'll answer a few like Sue suggested as a Bogus company, actually a local Taxi firm, and a local window firm are similar numbers to ours... just one digit different !
Came back from hols one yr with a string of messages, asking
1) when would their windowsbe ready , and
2) could they be picked up from the local supermarket (hope they're not still waiting..lol )

I used to get quite a few calls from people offering me free holidays, time shares, insulation, home improvement etc. I just said 'I'm on TPS and live in rented accommodation' - and they went. Haven't heard from them since.
Now I DO live in rented accommodation, but my sister, who owns her house now says the same, and hers are getting fewer.

There was ana rticle somewhere recently on this. The majority of the cold calls are generated out of the UK so they don't have to comply to the TPI laws. The phone numbers are sometimes 'sold on' by firms in UK who have your number for legitimate purposes, they can make a lot of money by selling them, I think I read that there have been prosecutions of people giving out numbers that are witheld numbers.. Others, in this country are taken from phone books.

We now leave the answer phone to kick in (as the article advised) and pick up if it is someone we recognise.

I had three calls yesterday on the land line, and FIVE missed called on my mobile, all with the the same number which I did not recognise. I called the number as I thought if someone is rinigng me five times it must be important, and it was a PPI call. I asked where they had got my number from and the man told me they received a number of database with names of people who could make a claim. I told him this was a LIE as I have never taken out a loan. I asked to be removed from the database, you will not believe this but I swear its true, later in the afternoon I received a text message from the same number.

In future I will leave the phone to ring and pick up if it is someone I recognise.

Sharron Report 9 Nov 2012 12:01

I had a call with a survey once so I did it, all bogus information, and now they ring up and ask for the person on the survey so I know I can enjoy telling them where to go.

I look on them as a service for me to vent my frustrations.

OH had some little git ring up demanding payment for advertizing. It was to the mobile so I laid it down for a while so they could pay for the call but i didn't have to listen to it.

Been on the TPS list for years and makes no difference.

Have come to the conclusion that makes no difference
what answering message I have on they still try so now
if i get any cold callers, they get a very hot reply and I cut
them off. Makes me feel good.

Try answering with a Foreign Accent or language,if that fails use genuine Anglo Saxon. :-D

ChrisofWessex

ChrisofWessex Report 9 Nov 2012 14:15

Oh Merlin - good old anglo saxon????????

I just recvd one of these calls about 10 minutes ago - bit different - lots of crackles and then wanted a Mr Allan Moore - got wrong number - are you the owner of this number? which number? the one I am using now to ring you, I don't know what number you are using, so they rattled off my number and I said - I don't own it - in OH's name and he is not Allan Moore or anything like it. ;-)

Why be rude to anyone when they are only trying to make a living?

For the cost of ID which I think I pay 50p a week I don't have to answer any International, Withheld, Unavailable, all 0845. My regular callers have their own personal ring tone so I know if it is a friend, family or business.

For people who have ex directory that is their problem if I don't answer the phone because the number is withheld. They are all asked by the answering machine to leave a message. So much easier.-jl

Don´t get many on the landline in Spain, but got one on my mobile yesterday.
Said he was from my telephone provider & asked if I was having a problem with my internet connection. I said no & asked him to speak in English, whereapon he asked me what my name was. I asked him why he was calling if he didn´t know who I was & he said he would get someone to call me back in 5 minutes in English.
Still waiting.

Paula+

Paula+ Report 9 Nov 2012 16:05

I personally would never be rude to anyone on the telephone and I appreciate that they are trying to earn a living. However, these are unsolicited calls and eight in one day from the same company is a bit excessive by any standards. I have politely asked for my name to be removed from the Database, and been given assurance (several times) that this will be done......... and later I have received another call.

Janet, I have caller ID but as my son lives in Guatemala and I have relatives in the States all of their numbers get routed by 'International' or 'Unavailable' and many of my family and friends withold their numbers (as I do).

Why should we have to adjust our personal preferences in order to avoid being annoyed by someone sitting in a call centre outside the UK so they can happily flout UK law?

Something wrong here cos never log out but have had to log in to reply!

However we are on TPS and have number withheld and not accept nos withheld calls.
We still get some tho and having investigated we have found calls from abroad bypass any checks .

Any unwanted calls from UK based company's have reported to the TPS and these haven't been received again :-\

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 9 Nov 2012 17:37

The thing is Janet, they are not all trying to make an honest living. The ones who call saying they can fix your computer are not trying to make a living, they are trying to get access to your computer.

Isn't there an advert, I think it is for coffee, when she gets one of these calls and puts the phone down on the table while she makes a coffee. Then says after a while. Could you call back the same time tomorrow please? (so that she can take another coffee break).

GlasgowLass

GlasgowLass Report 9 Nov 2012 18:28

I am also registered with the TPS but still get all these calls too.
They get around TPS because they insist they are not trying to 'sell' anything.

Of course the call is about selling on the info that you provide, which ultimitely produces more unwanted calls... which are not considered as Cold Calling .
The trick is never to appear interested, and never ever fill in a ' survey'.
These are usually dressed up as a free draw... the sort of thing you get handed on flights!

I also have caller ID and yesterday at 7pm, I received one of those Government Incentive Scheme calls. ( only 2 at the door yesterday and just 1 today)
The only reason that I answered the phone, was because the number was neither witheld nor unavailable.
I listened to the patter and politely said "no thank you" .

My phone rang just 20 mins ago... it was the SAME number again.
This time, I let it ring out

Heat Loss,Government Backed------rubbish they are window people and make it sound they are acting on behalf of the government,

Gremlins in PC-----are scammers,

PPI----are companies wanting to make a quick buck.

Surveys,,,,,,are collectors who then sell on to others so they can bombard you with all the above.
