I have an Acer Extensa, Windows 7 & a mouse & I get the problem too, but only intermittently,often when I´m typing a block of text rather than just a couple of sentences.
It happened on my old laptop too, which was running on XP.I always use a mouse because the touchpad drives me crazy, but have changed them at least 3 times So don´t think that´s the cause.

Mouse usually is connected via a USB point. I have one for my net book

Maybe the people who looked at your thread (like me) didn't know how to help you.

I have a pcline usb mouse from I think Pc world..........using it on
my samsung lappie running xp is fine............on my toshiba one running windows 7 it plays up, not at all steady...........like pulling it with a rubber band in treacle, at times

Rollo and Ronald, Julia doesn't use a mouse, I do. We both get jumping cursor.

Son has laptop and young daughter (9) uses it. He's made things easy by using a mouse so no probs. Must be a point somewhere on lappy where mouse can be powered

The problem of the cursor jumping around is fairly common on Windows XP.
Very often it is caused by special software for the mouse / keyboard enabling "advanced" features. One of the worst sinners is Microsoft Intellimouse / Keyboard.

The first time I saw this I thought it was some kind of virus as in extreme cases the whole screen gets the shakes. But no, just a driver bug. If you run the computer in safe mode the jumping cursor will probably not happen.

Fix: remove Intellimouse/keyboard software (or other oem) and revert back to default mouse & keyboard drivers.

I think the circle you are describing is the unavailable cursor, a bit like a no entry sign. Perhaps you have a stuck key or another program running in the background,so the computer is trying to do two things at once.
Sorry I can't be anymore technical than that :-(

My cursor also jumps into the middle of the text so my typing is inserted into random places.
Mine's a laptop and It might help if I could disable the touchpad but as it seems to be assumed that everyone wants to use that and not a mouse it is not straight forward. I have searched many times and no, a sharp tap on the indentation next to the touchpad doesn't work :-( :-|
