I think people of all political parties sat up and took notice and had opinions on this speech, but it took two decades before anyone started to take it seriously. I wonder what EP would think of the state of the nation today.

Paula+ I lived in Wolverhampton (Finchfield) till 1958. My parents were Liberal activists in '45 and '51 (supporting Sir Geoffrey Mander of paints and Wightwick Hall) but dad had the utmost respect for Powell.

And, yes, Merlin, he was on the side of the immigrants and many voted for him. He was probably the best Prime Minister we never had.

Just one aside. It would be about the time of that '68 speech. I was living in Bangor then and was listening to Welsh language radio. And Powell was interviewed in Welsh. It was very precise and academic Welsh but he was very fluent. One of cleverest men of that generation - and we finished up with Douglas-Home and Heath :-( :-(

I used to lived in Wolverhampton at the time and can recall the impact it had on not only his constituants. He made his speech on the 20th April 1968, the final paragraph referring to immigration reads "Only resolute and urgent action will avert it even now. Whether there will be the public will to demand and obtain that action, I do not know. All I know is that to see, and not to speak, would be the great betrayal."

I think it is probably too late.

I cannot understand why we are so soft on these people. Have you ever looked at what problems you would have if you tried to emigrate to another country.

I looked at emigrating to India a few years ago. Not very seriously, but enough to realise it is extemely difficult if you are not an Indian national. You cannot buy property or land if you are a European and you can only get a 6 month visa each year. So people have live 6 months in India then return to UK for 6 months or move somwhere like Thailand for 6 months.

We know why so many want to come here. It is the weather and the culture. They appreciate all the benefits the UK offers. Can there be any country in the world as lax as the UK in controlling immigrants?

If ,as is quite likely, he gets anything, perhaps he will be charged for bed and board, plus all the other money he has got out of the taxpayer over the time he has been here,also that the people representing him in court will not get legal aid to act for him and have to pay the costs themselves.**M**.

I sometimes look at the "Rivers of Blood" speech by Enoch Powell over 40 years ago. Some of it seemed inflammatory at the time and now seems illegal - but times have changed and I doubt he would say things exactly the same today. Worth a read in light of these despicabble Abus. However liberal your views.

But there is no denying he was an exceptionally clever man and a bit of a prophet.

What is our duty as a British citizen? Queen first - we can all ask Allah, or whoever our God is, to save her and make her victorious. Whether we are Jew, Muslim, Rastafarian comes second. That seems to happen in United States and other countries - why not here?

If people don't want to be British first, there are plenty of countries that they can happily live in.

i hope his assets of £217,286. are being taxed the same way as my small pittance is. i thought you could only have £1600 in savings..he can well afford to pay for his own and familys upkeep. but we mugs have to pay. something will happen before too long in this country. we have all had enough of the spongers and parasites we have to keep.

This case is another example of the weakness of out pitiful government who haven't the balls to disregard the so called human rights ruling and stick him on a plane out of here, by force if necessary.

He is meant to be a preacher of the Islamic faith, says it all.
All religious extremist are dangerous and evil whatever so called faith they follow.

It also shows how there is a major problem in this country with our benefit system.

It beggars belief, it really does. Maybe they should be a bit lax on security, then someone may get near enough to solve the situation in a fitting way?

The Legal Services Commission says that just over £825,000 has been spent on legal aid in the Abu Qatada case. Assets belonging to the preacher worth £217,286 have been frozen to be used towards the final lelegal bill. He is one of the most dangerous extremist preachers in the UK. Where on earth did he get this money from, and why are we continuing to keep him and his family in a Country they clearly hate?

It's about time this Government stood up to the EU and their regulations. I am sick and tired of hearing about anyone who claims asylum that claim all the benefits, NHS treatment and the like without ever having paid a penny into this country. Why the hell do we let them all in - we are such a soft touch and yet when it comes to our 'own' we have to beg for help or face a means test for every penny and then they find ways and means of not giving it to us.

Whilts I'm on me band waggon, what happened to all the money sent to the starving in Africa many, many years ago. They are still in the same situation and still we are asked to donate.
