I am a churchgoer :-D

like politics, you can argue, debate and discuss religion till the end of time, I know what I believe, what I think - I never get involved in debates on either

The last funeral I attended was taken by a female vicar and all I could think about was 'for crying out loud speak up' as I couldn't hear a word she was babbling on about.
I don't think I would have been so annoyed if a man had taken the service..........unless he walked in with a cup of cocoa-jl

I think everyone is entitled to their own opinions and without resorting to childish comments can believe or not believe, no-one is ever going to convince either side of the other ones arguments - much better to agree to disagree and leave it at that.

Cyn,

Caroline was struck by MS at 18! What keeps her going? it's not faith. It's her determination to get everything out of life that she can whilst she can.

Her consultant's words helped her so much, basically telling her to get out and do whatever she wants to do and can manage, bugger the MS cos you are a long time dead!

Friends on here know what she has achieved, earned her degree, the outrageous stuff she has got up to and the admiration I have for her travelling on her own in Guatemala (which her brother didn't tell me about until she went back to his place)..lolol

I'll stop there cos I will be boring members who know all this.

So it doesn't make any difference whether one has faith when presented with a tragedy, it's determination not to be beaten by it.

Cynthia, I guess I must be one of the few who has/would not be 'grateful' for prayer when the inevitable difficult times come.
However I would and have been appreciative of kind words and practical help but I do not see religion as some sort of special healing.
Like many people on this board I too have had a lot of upsets, ailments and tragedy around my family to cope with but I wouldn't say it qualified me anymore than others to say what is weakness and strength. I like to think I can offer a little support to anyone whose life is touched by similar upsets. Nothing to do with religion, just being a caring human. :-) :-)

Gosh, how this thread has evolved :-S

Janet

Janet Report 23 Nov 2012 14:55

LilyL if everyone is entitled to their opinion and agree to disagree then we wouldn't be having a debate. How boring is that?.....are you a libran-lol.........that should bring Eldrick back onto the boards-jl

AnnCardiff Report 23 Nov 2012 14:56

I think the "childish" comments serve to bring a touch of levity to the proceedings which have got rather heavy to say the least

Island

Island Report 23 Nov 2012 14:59

Childish comments??? :-S :-S

If everyone was to 'agree to disagree' what a quiet world it would be! :-S :-D

edit - oops! you girls are so quick! "fastest finger first" - whose catch phrase was that?

Well, i like cynthia. I like the way she can discuss the topic without reverting to biblical quotations and proselytising remarks. I can respect someone who is like that, even if i have no respect for religion.

If all religious people were like her, the world would be nicer than itis. Sadly, with evangelicals, creationists and fundamentalists of all flavours, the argument over who has the bestest god will, if unchecked, destroy everyone on this planet. That fact alone should be enough to provide a clarion call to all thinking people, but it doesn't.

LilyL

LilyL Report 23 Nov 2012 16:20

I simply don't see the point in discussing/arguing about something that none of us can categorically prove one way or the other. No doubt at the very end of the day, all or nothing will become revealed, but until then- we just don't know. The trouble with science is that a question answered just provokes another question and so on until there are no more answers because we don't know. religion on the other hand has answers which tend to bring out the sceptic in people, to believe EVERYTHING in both the OT and NT would be very difficult; having said that religion brings a lot of comfort to a lot of people through good times and bad and that has to be a good thing. Equally religion has caused a lot of misery and continues to do so.and that of course is a bad thing - curates egg!! Perhaps best to be open minded on both fronts. No not a Libran, an Aquarian.

Why thank you kind sir, but I can assure you that I am not unique......well, on here I am but that's by the by :-D

Ann, if you go to church, then I presume you have a faith. Could do with some support here girl....... ;-)

Island

Island Report 23 Nov 2012 17:17

I'm rather bemused by LilyL :-S Are you telling us all to 'shut up'? Surely not :-0

Cynthia, I sometimes took my dad to church in his later years, I quite enjoyed the sing song and chin-wag afterwards. Occasionally I'd nip along on my own because it was nice to catch up with some of the people from my childhood. It was a social thing rather than religious for me and I must admit that 'the team' were very good to us - without trying to instill their beliefs on me. I really appreciated their care and kjndness.

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 23 Nov 2012 18:02

LilyL how is a constant quest for answers a problem? If science didnt constantly look for answers you wouldnt be using.a computer, there wouldnt be advances in medicine, transport, a whole mass of things that we all take for granted. Religion is static, doesnt question itself and stays firmly rooted in the bronze age. It changes the goalposts when science shows, for instance, that evolution is an accepted premise and that we live in a heliocentric not geocentric solar system. Poor Galileo paid the price for that discovery and he never got an apology until a few years ago!

So yes, whilst it cannot be categorically proved that god does not exist, The only people that think he does are willing to suspend disbelief and critical thinking whilst accepting the progress and advances in science in their everyday lives. There is not the tiniest shred of the merest hint of any evidence of the existence of an all seeing deity. None whatsoever. A book isnt evidence. Faith isnt evidence. Hallucinations arent evidence.

I think you're doing fine without me Cynthia - I don't consider myself to be that eloquent - for me, the two stars of this debate are you and Eldrick - no contest
