Thanks for all your input. It has been very interesting. I am steering away from going on to facebook itself but am going to have a go at 'stopping' their emails coming into my inbox but diverting them to the Span/suspicious box !! Thanks everybody.

I think if you read both GR and FB T&C's you will find the they can pass on and use certain parts of the info they hold on you to other web sites and services

T&C 7. Additional services

Privacy Policy, 2. The information we gather and track

also see details at the bottom of this page under the "Affiliates" tab

In summary: GR and FB share some of your info

Just logged back on for a quick neb and noticed on the home page that you can log on to GRU using your (if you have one) Face Book logging data. Nasty that. Wonder wot info from this site is being amssed by FB?

Island you are correct

Margaret.

May I suggest you start to log on to FB using the applicable Email address.

You then need to insert 'your' password which of course you dont have soooooooooo there is a facility on the same log in page for you to ask FB for 'your' password. Ask for it and it will be mailed to the Email addy you used to try to log in.

Once you have the password you can then log on.

Wot happens then is up to you. You could of course delete the account or try to contact the 'owner'. If you could contact the owner they could change their Email addy thus ending your problem but, could perhaps be that tis a dodgy account.

Be aware Face Book security is quite often a farce, the site has been hacked in the past and a fault not long back meant some peoples accounts could be got into without use of a password! I'm a member of FB but I never make use of their games, events etc etc as I know they are a risk area. Currently I am getting spam Emails from 2 of my "Friends" and my DiL which I know are coming via the site but NOT actually from the people concerned.

Hope this helps. Ron

Paula, I doubt joining FriendsRe would automatically sign you up for GR.

It'th a mythteree, it'th a mythteree :-S :-S

Emma, did you stop and start again?

PollyinBrum

PollyinBrum Report 27 Nov 2012 15:10

Thank you AnnG I did join Friends reunited but that was long long before 2008 and DetEc said they are they are connected, so perhaps that is the reason.

'Emma' Report 27 Nov 2012 15:05

Well I thought i had been a member before 2010 but seems not. :-)

Paula it is still showing you as being a member since 2008. I can only perhaps think that maybe in 2008 you clicked on GR to see what was what and inadvertently 'joined' as a free member.

lol Det. I know I am getting more and more senior moments but I really didn't join in 2008. It's very strange, When I put my sisters name into my family tree it said she was a member, she was really cross and said she had never heard of GR. Rather like "Alice in the Looking Glass"............

Paula+.... its when you register but don't pay a subscription. You can build a tree and reply to private messages, but that's about it.

If people have noticed your 'apparent' joining date when you started to post on the Boards, they've probably made the same suggestions. :-)

PollyinBrum

PollyinBrum Report 27 Nov 2012 11:50

Det I never joined in 2008, what is a free tree? I physically became a member in Oct 2012

Margaret I complained to FB as they kept saying I had suggested people to become friends and adding people saying I had requested them as friends and I most certainly had not. I am very careful and particular when using FB, as you say we live and learn.

Margaret

Margaret Report 27 Nov 2012 11:31

Well this is all very interesting. In my niaivety I hadn't realised that this could happen. I assumed that unless you joined and 'signed up' to a particular site, you would not appear on there and also did not appreciate that there could possibly be a link whereby the likes of facebook could benefit from a membership of another site - ie being a member of Genes. My faith in being 'careful' and protecting my privacy has been shattered. Well you do live and learn as they say !!!

Your profile does say that you joined GR in 2008! Maybe you had a free tree on here dating from about then?

Although GR has a page on FB, that's the only 'link' they have. You have to physically create a membership for GR.

GR does have a social media sister site called Friendsreunited.

Island Report 27 Nov 2012 11:24

Ah! now I get you Paula. I remember you posting about your join date on GR - most odd, did they explain it?
GR and FB aren't connected businesswise but GR does have a page on FB.

Thing is Emma, apart from the few friend requests sent to me for someone elses account I don't get any mysterious goings on, viewings of dirty linen or dodgy old BFs getting in touch. Am I doing something wrong? :-S

Be carefull what you wish for...... ;-) :-D
