The great-great-grandfathers had both been "ordinary blokes" what what interesting and diverse lives they led.
Watched it as it was shown, but also recorded it. Will enjoy watching it again.

It was marvellous to get the tours of the ships too, The best of the series.

What a shame it wasn't shown when it should have been.

Brilliant programme - Portsmouth reminded me of the lunchtimes I spent admiring the boats (free access to them 'cos I had a pass) and cavorting with the feral cats :-D

Fascinating ancestors - especially Charles.

He already knew his GGrandfather was a vicar as he was told during a programe of league of their own.

Itsmytelly actually watched it with me, and kept asking questions I felt quiet knowledgeable being able to answer them on the subject, he also said are they not going to go further back, I told him they will bulid flesh on these bones are there a plently and they dont always go back and back unless there is something excitingto show, sometimes there isnt. :-D

Yes, it was really excellent.

What really interested me was the Lay Vicar at Chichester and York. One of mine was Vicar Choral at Lichfield. Same job (8 of them at Lichfield) and he got a small salary, a lovely tied cottage and a sackbutt of mead every year.

And also Liverpool, with those lovely old buildings. What a place for his gt gt grandfather to settle eventually. I can understand why you like him and his accent so much, Rose :-D

Yes I agree with everyone the best episode by far.

Very interesting ancestors, and John was so keen he searched census details himself,instead of relying on others.

He seemed really proud to learn of his GGGrandfathers didn't he?..nothing at all boring about their lives.

Hope it will be repeated as I missed some of it and would love to watch it right through again. It sounded really fascinating, and JB was suitably impressed, as well he might be. I do like him, he was great when he did the marathon cycle ride for charity and seems to be a down to earth bloke.
I couldn't record it as o.h. wanted something else recorded.

To be honest, I’ve never heard of him. Never-the-less, it was an interesting programme, touching on a different aspect of the Naval life than we’ve seen before.

I agree that it was the best for a long time.
A really nice chap...and more like the sort of research we are all interested in.

I enjoyed the programme more than some I have seen. I know that sometimes things can be very emotional but I never understood the tears of certain participants. I thought JB thoroughly enjoyed his research and seemed genuinely surprised and delighted at his findings. What a nice chap!

It was certrainly strange the way Charles and John's lives ran parallel in leaving secure jobs for show biz and that he played in theatres Charles had.

Laughed when he asked 'how do I tell my kids or my father?'

When they said his gt gt grandfather was a Lay Vicar and realised that was a non-ordained leader of Cathedral music like the Vicars Choral in Lichfield, I wondered what his voice was.

And it was basso profundo!!! Respect, real respect. How many times have I listened to Paul Robeson singing. He was an adopted Welshman, you know. He loved singing with the Pendyrus, Treorchy and the other fine "Corau Meibion" (Male Voice Choirs).

The only other basso profundo I know about was that chap in the Inkspots. "Do Nuts" would be sung like the notes were hidden deep in his boots :-D
