"The planet's two largest ice sheets are melting three times faster today than they were in the 1990s, according to a new study.

The most accurate analysis of satellite measurements to date showed that the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets have lost four trillion tons of ice since 1992.

The melt water has added 11.1mm to global sea levels."

Llandudno is my yardstick. That is 8 feet above sea level at highest point. When that goes, I go :-( :-( :-(

Glad I live up a hill..albeit near the coast and can see the sea!!

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 30 Nov 2012 09:54

You'll be safe, Brenda. As long as you don't expect to live for more than another 100 years. Even then, I expect there will be advantages. Not so far to go to the beach :-D :-D

I wouldnt pay too much attention to be honest. Its only scientists who are making this absurd claim.

Do you know anyone else that might be be able to verify or negate it?

:-D :-D :-D :-D

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 30 Nov 2012 09:58

My feet get wet a lot more. And I have O level in biology.

That must be sufficient - even for an old cynic like you, Eldrick :-D :-D

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 30 Nov 2012 10:18

hmmm. Theres lots of causes for wet feet. Especially amongst the elderly.

It's common sense to be concerned, (and not just in the short term for how it affects us now), and please don't tell me that it is only a repeat of what has happened in the past ( ie the temperature has peaked and troughed throughout the millions of years) yes I know that...I read science as well as other stuff lol.

I understand that the current 'global warming' is NOT just down to man made influences, BUT 'we' have been industrialised for only around 300 of those years, this has had a massive effect ( population growth, industry, the devastation of forests, destruction of habitats etc etc) ...it is up to 'us' to counteract that effect as much as possible whatever the 'natural' cycles that we have no control over may be.

not giving a damn, is not an option...whether the crisis is man mad, God made, nature made or made by The Great Penguin sitting on his own iceberg and melting the rest of the ice to show his powers ;-)

Play nicely boys :-D

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 30 Nov 2012 10:32

well, yes. We could do something about it or we could keep trying to kill each other off to prove who has the best god, who has the most oil or who has the best whatever else springs to mind!

But we won't, so might as well joke about it, after all those other things are far more important than the survival of the human race in the long term.

Just imagine all that money involved in the military machine being invested in science and technology that could help us overcome or manage global warming......

Wake up you fool!

JohnLovesHorlicks

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 30 Nov 2012 10:32

I could not see that incontinence could possibly be the main reason for this rise in water levels, Rose :-D

I was hoping someone would be able to seriously analyse the scientific reasons why we are needing to drink the earth dry at the present time ;-)

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 30 Nov 2012 10:33

It was the touchy remark I didnt understand, Jon

:-D :-D :-D

JohnLovesHorlicks

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 30 Nov 2012 10:39

It means the same as checkmate, Eldrick. ;-)

Just accept my compliment and don't be so touchy :-D

We mere mortals will have to watch and wait whilst scientists sort it all out for us. :-D

i think all the ice has been found this morning in Middlesbrough
you cant put a foot infront of the other
without slipping and sliding down the street

and all the cars are white with frost :-(

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 30 Nov 2012 10:44

touche, you mean. Ahhh. Now its clear.

Its doesnt mean checkmate, it means the acknowledgement of the superiority of an argument. Literally speaking, its a fencing term and should have an accent over the end 'E'. In fencing terms it means the acknowledgement of a hit or a 'touch'.

So I doubly thank you! :-D :-D
