Does anyone remember a story over a year ago about us getting significant tax rebates. It was because the HMRC computer had miscalculated tax for about 6 years and most people would get a sizeable refund once they had sorted problems out.

A couple of weeks ago, my hubby was informed that he was to get a modest, but very welcome, tax rebate. Three days later, he received a letter to say his tax had been underpaid!
He's convinced they are wrong,and is contending it. You'll never win with the Taxman! :-(

All I got was a letter saying I had under paid by £600 :-0

I had been drawing my pension & working 2 days a week ...paying the tax at the code given to my employer by them when I started to draw my pension.

I gave up work and at the end of the tax year got a rebate of £30, how they worked that out I really do not know :-S but I banked it & did not ask any questions :-D

Probably 2010. It was significant for most people. Some would lose up to £400, some would stand to gain over £1,000. Overall quite a lot of money due to be refunded by HMRC.

They were going to sort it out and millions of taxpayers were to get letters. They said it would not be quick.:-(

There does seem to be something about it on google about Sept 2010, but my computer is playing up and can't get on sites.

How nice that would be if Chancellor said something. Hope he is not saving it till just before next Election. ;-)

Carol HMRC are a law to themselves. One year income £39k, tax bill £27k.. You try recovering from that when you run a small business!!!!!!

It was in all the papers at time (end of 2010?) and a lot of money owed to a lot of taxpayers.

I know I was rather hoping for a small four figure windfall by now and it applied particularly to those in ordinary PAYE employment :-S

Found this from Ian Cowie blog dated 6 Sept 2010.

"Good news about tax rebates for up to 10m people, following widespread bungling of the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system, could be overshadowed by new bureaucratic burdens for four times as many taxpayers, accountants claim."

So the good news for 10m taxpayers would probably have been heralded in papers just before 6 Sept 2010. Looks like I missed the fact that HMRC were not going to give us our money back :-(

I have not worked for almost 4 years and have been on ESA.

In 2010 I was allowed to claim a small pension from a bank I worked for over 20 years ago and this took me just over the amount I was allowed to earn, so they took some tax.

They have sent me a couple of new tax codes in the last couple of months with calculations which I did not understand but in October they gave me a refund of about £130 which was greatly recieved

Today they sent me a letter saying they wrote to me in September saying I owe them £79....what on earth are they playing at?

Oh Jax. I feel so sorry for you. They just do not understand what effect their inefficiency has on us.

I have put on another thread that they taxed me one year I was self employed £27.5k on my income of £39k. I never really recovered from stress of that and had to close down business 2 years later (which was doing very well even after that tax demand)

And more recently (c2004) they gave us about £3k in child tax credit (something like that) and, after we had spent it, wrote about 8 months later to say they had made a mistake and we owed them £3k.

No need to feel sorry, its the inconvience and messing me around. If they can add the refund onto my pension, they can take it the same way as I am not going to send them a cheque as I have no idea where my book is and I am now unable to write.

There is no other ay to pay unless I want to pay by installments...which I dont

Finally had my tax rebate this morning. Slightly over £1,500.

Will not be able to post this week as I will be in London for a few days. Sorry - not taking my lap totty.

Have booked one of the best rooms in a London hotel. Looks very good. Claridges. Only £69.00 a night.

Will have loads of cash left over. Can anyone suggest what 2 fairly mature and fun-loving people can do in London for a week on a virtually bottomless budget?
