was going to send it to writers group, but you're all here anyway :-)

Austerity Christmas

The buzz word for this year?
It has to be ‘austerity’
No job, no cash, no saving up
In short we’ve zilch prosperity.

A cake without the icing
To wartime recipe
Mince pies with scanty filling
And bread and scrape for tea.

The budgie’s looking wary
He’s very glad we’re veggie
If not he might have reason
For getting pretty edgy.

No turkey here or chicken
No flaming brandy pud
We might just share a vol au vent
If everybody’s good.

The mice can have a party
(there’s no cheese for the traps)
And though we have some crackers
we can't afford the snaps.

The tree’s up in the front room
Just like it was last year
The baubles look quite tatty
But new ones are too dear.

I’ve sent out all the Christmas cards
Enclosed the annual letter
Which says “You won’t get pressies
Until the times get better”

I don’t think friends will mind too much
Though there may be some disdain
From those who do not know
How much that sentence causes pain.

I DO like to give presents
The very act of giving
But this year I can’t manage
With the rising cost of living.

So I’ll send the thing I can afford
And that is love a’plenty
And hope that no one minds
That their stocking remains empty!

Thankyou John :-)

I'm going to settle down to watch 'Super Scrimpers Christmas' at 8, if only out of curiosity to see how one makes a snowman decoration out of an old lightbulb!
