Well, mother nature has let rip today. A tornado swept through West Auckland this afternoon.

Three confirmed dead, seven hospitalised , some with serious injuries.

Lots of people are unable to return to their houses and are going into a shelter for tonight.

A very sad day for a lot of people..

I live quite a way south of the city and we had very heavy rain, thunder and lightening, we got off lightly.

RIP to those who lost their lives today.

Oh how awful Susan, I am glad you got off lightly but feel so sorry for those who have been affected, what an awful Christmas many of them will have. My thoughts go especially to those who have lost loved ones, may they rest in peace, and may their families get all the support and comfort available to help them through.

Take care

So many awful things happening in the world, seem to be more and more natural disasters, are they of our own making do you suppose?

Not on the same scale and slightly different but still a sad loss - the other day, a little girl of 4 was killed in her grandmother's car, on a railway crossing - human error?, car fail? crossing warning fail? One death not many as in some disasters , but still devastating to those who loved that little one and her little life cut short.

Life is so precious and we take it for granted till something happens to make us rethink.

I was in Hunua and we had a real downpour in the afternoon (I was at a party in the hall), but I didnt hear any thunder and didnt know about the tornadoes until I got home.

Scozz, which part of Auckland? It was in the Henderson/Hobsonville area.

I have quite a lot of family (3 cousins and their repective children and grandchildren) in Hawkes Bay area.

So I should imagine a lot of us are worried about family out there.

So many disasters over last few years. The tunnel collapse in Japan may not have affected us as much as NZ, but it is a huge worry. How many tunnels do we drive through or journey through every day?

I heard from my cousins.

Everyone OK. One of them had to rush out to the carpark at work & move her car, half an hour later it would have been flooded!

Very sad that people died, and so distressing for those who lost homes <3

Sorry Huia I missed your post ~ one cousin is in Papakura in Auckland, another in Kerri Kerri, not sure about the others.

Very sad and condolences to those who have lost friends and family. Glad your family are safe Scozz, and that you are too.

I don't like tunnels John after the collapse in Dorset of the Beaminster one, which they are apparently just starting to repair. Two lives lost in that one. No country seems safe after all the weird weather we are all getting.

Scozz, perhaps I know your Papakura cousin as I do my shopping there. If she sees somebody with very short hair, tell her to say hi. Or is it a him?

Kerikeri (note the spelling) is way up north.

Mau, not too far from Northcote, at least not as far as I am and I have a sister over on North Shore but havent bothered to phone her as it wasnt in their area, so dont worry.

Susan-nz

Susan-nz Report 7 Dec 2012 05:38

Thanks Huia for keeping an eye on this thread.

I note the PM has today commented that he has never seen such destruction as at the site where the three men were sadly killed.

Mau, I have a very dear friend who lives at Northcote Point. So close to the inner city :-).

Glad everyone NZ rellies are safe.
