CRB checks will only pick up 'bad-uns' if they have a record, so if they have never been caught the will get a clean bill of health.

Then you get the young lad of 17 who gets his girlfriend of 15 pregnant, her parents go balistic, he gets taken to court for having sex with a minor and this stays on his records forever. Yes, technically he is in the wrong but.....

Then you get the girl who cries rape and that man is taken to court and it is eventually found out that he is completely innocent - but his name has been in the papers and he is still on police files .....


The CRB checks are not totally infallible, but they go someway to protecting everyone, not just children.

Susan with numbers, I too am a Brownie and Rainbow Leader. The rules are you are allowed to work in the unit without a check as long as you are never alone with the girls and you are supervised by another Guider. We are also lucky in that our CRB checks are paid for us which hopefully does not put anyone off joining us.

Having applied for a job in July, been appointed in October and STILL waiting for a CRB to be finalised, I'd say it was a very good idea, as I have had 3 in the last 12 months for other things, none of which are transferable

My daughter is a brownie leader. She was allowed to start before the CRB check was finalised. We were amazed and I was angry. My daughter could have been a criminal, thank goodness she isn't .

Good news, my son was telling me that his CRB check doesn't cover him for any other voluntary posts except the one it was done for, so this new idea makes a lot more sense. At last someone with a bit of common sense

Centrally held information should help alot.
When I did supply teaching, I needed checks for each individual primary school, even though they were all under the same county council.

I needed yet another to help in a nearby nursery school.

The paperwork for the latter and for one of the schools was sent off within the same fortnight.

That's one of them, then there were the nursery school workers, can't remember names and the photos of the babies. They must all have had checks but thus far had not offended. There will always be loopholes to crawl through.

I think they've learnt a lesson from that, hither a Central Control base, combining all Police districts.

Nothing seems to be foolproof, and the CRB has failed us before.

It makes you think though ... 12 months ago Saville`s CRB check would have been OK`d, so its not a foolproof thing is it. It only goes on convictions, unfortunately.

I had my new CRB renewed 10 days ago by online method.I already have it back.Much quicker than the old way.

It come across as if it was making it easy for any Joe Bloggs to do a check on say, that unsavoury looking new neighbour a few doors away. :-D

Having the check done is normally a pre-requisite of being accepted as a volunteer or employee.

Ah I see, its a cost cutting exercise. I thought for a moment it was some thing to do with the actual CRB check its self.

I take it that CRB information will stay as is, and whoever the check is done on HAVE to give their consent?

Enhanced - £44 As above - plus any additional information held locally by police forces that’s reasonably considered relevant to the post applied for About 4 weeks

JC At the moment each time you volunteer for a position (i.e. to help in a school) with children or vulnerable adults you have to apply for a CRB check. This can take 28 days, meanwhile people lose interest in volunteering, and charities and schools can't take on willing helpers. Each time you have to apply separately. sending the form off and waiting for it to be returned. Doing the form on line will speed the initial form up a bit but the main thing is the information being held centrally and agencies and charities being able to check it on line. Presumably there will be some check to ask if there are any updates but it will apparently be very useful for Junior and locum doctors who need a new CRB check every time they move hospital. presumably it will take pressure off people like the police who have to respond to the checks too.

They would have to get a CRB check for each one.

Even a Teacher who volunteers elsewhere would also need additional CRB checks.

There are also 2 levels (edit 3) at different costs. One is sort of general where the person won't be alone with a child or vulnerable person, the other more rigourous where they will or might be.

It seems to be a good idea if the records are indeed on line and regularly updated. The problem might arise if the person has committed some crime which would rule them out with working with children/vulnerable adults after the original CRB check but before they took on a new position.

I can`t see as this will make a diffference, will some one enlighten me.
