It's happened for decades though. British made shoes would use soles that were sent abroad to be processed and then brought back as it was cheaper to do that. The alternative is more expensive goods or lower wages here. Most wouldn't want either of those either.

So worrying this thread. Long gone are the days when we would buy groceries in season. From local farmers and producers. Now it doesn't matter - strawberries are available all year round. So is plaice. So are chestnuts.

It seems crazy to me that we are processing Scottish prawns in Thailand. I assume the larger supermarkets have good quality control throughout their supply chain. And they have employees in Thailand checking everything. But what about the discount retailers, convenience stores and market traders?

I can see some major problems on the horizon. All of us are eating produce from all over the world now. And it won't only be "prawn agains" who will have tummy bugs and worse. :-(

Talking about nuts from China, did you know most of Canada`s Peanut Butter comes from Peanuts grown in China.

There was a programme on tv a while back that showed prawns being sent to Asia and processed and returned here ready packed, apparently it works out cheaper for them to be dealt with like this, Seems crazy to me tho but again, it's all about the money, never mind environmental issues

I don't buy fish from Asia.

I've seen the fish farms. Especially the polluted rivers where they keep prawns.

Believe me, don't do it!!!!!!!!! :-(

We're lucky, we live on the coast & there's a fisherman's co-op five minutes drive away. We often get prawns that were cooked a couple of hours before we got to the shop.

If your product has a barcode, try googling for it, that should show you where it comes from. In Oz, many products are labelled "product of New Zealand", but that only means it's packed there, the (usually fruit & veg) product was grown in China. China uses fertilisers etc which are banned in Australia.

Not always easy but I do try not to buy anything that comes from a country that routinely kills it's children.

I picked up a packet of prawns in the supermarket. The label boldly said "Scottish Prawns"
Then closer inspection it said "Processed in Thailand"

Am I to assume they are grown in Scotland, sent to Thailand, then processed and sent back here? - how silly. I didn't buy them anyway.

Not all Chinese produce is of good quality. I remember reading a while ago about pine nuts imported from China that caused allergic reactions and health problems.

Ann, I must admit I rush around shopping and never look, but every now and again I look at products and am surprised where they come from.

Always remember hearing once, milk from England sent to France then sent back as yogurt, what a waste of money that must be :-S

I'm sure we are all aware that most things we buy these days are made in China but I was a little gobsmacked to discover today that a bag of chestnuts I bought this morning are produce of China!!!
