We don't get as many bats these days, but years ago at sunset it looked like a big black cloud (a smelly one). They make a helluva thud when they fly into a window.

We seem to have changed the topic of this thread, Scozz!

Cicadas are the sound of summer to me although they do get very noisy.

We have fruit bats in a huge figtree in the bush behind our house. We can hear them flying around some nights and squealing.

I didn't realise the plague was that recent. I'm thinking quite a number of years ago. We had some really big ones that flew against the window or sliding door when the light was on in the kitchen. We would go outside the next morning and find a number of them lying around the door.

but it doesnt seem that many years ago, maybe 3.
Last october I only saw a couple of dead ones on the path one morning. and stopped my cat from chewing them up. yuk>

But I think this summer the cicadas will be in full throng very soon.
Their shells hanging on the outside walls, and then off they fly into the gums making a heck of a noise day and night.

Scozz. when I was a kid the flying foxes used to fly from Fraser Island over the farm each night . yes you could smell them coming. They flew past for at least half an hour, there was so many. We had a sound blaster in our orchards to prevent them from landing.

I think I'd rather have your big moths than our fruit bats (flying foxes)!! Horrible things, they poo everywhere & it STINKS!

we have the great Bogong moth here in our area during the month of October.
wingspan of around 10 cm. boy do they make a bang when the hit the windows trying to get to the light!

We have big moths in NZ, the Puriri moth is very big.

I think MOTH may have scared the p**p out of them.

He's not a small man....... about 6' tall & 100Kg ......not an ounce of fat (not like me lol)

The male dog next door was going mental. He's a large staffy, seems to think it's his job to protect me. That's fine with me :-)

Combination of MOTH & Staffy should do the job :-D

Used to happen all the time to me. But luckily they never hurt themselves.

Think they used to try it on because I live on my own. Never did to my next door neighbours as men lived there.

This morning, two of them.

I heard the dogs next door barking, looked out and saw two boys (age about 12) on bikes, on my front path right outside the door.

Excuse me, what do you want?

We're looking at your plants.

Yeah right.

Then one said "I fell over on your path and scraped my leg, do you have a bandaid?"

The law can be stupid; even though these boys were on private property, and NOT invited, I could be held responsible for an injury.

I got a wet cloth to clean off the blood and bandaids. I didn't touch the boy, gave him the cloth & bandaids. He wiped his leg, got the bandaids and then dropped the cloth & the packaging on the path. I asked them to pick them up, he did so, but reluctantly.

I told them they shouldn't have been there in the first place, it was against the law. They weren't impressed.

I went back inside, heard MOTH come home........ and a bellow 'WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TWO DOING IN MY GARDEN???"......... and the kids bolted :-D
