I was talking to someone yesterday who I know absolutely hates it when they catch someone out in a lie to them, and has been known to 'set traps' lol ....but who nonetheless is rather good at it themselves, certainly at 'lying by omission' and it gave me pause for thought, on the lies/liars I have 'encountered' lol ( rather too many unfortunately lol) .

As ever it reminded me of a song lyric ( most things do!)

" We both have truths, are mine the same as yours?" ( name that tune ;-0 )

Are you a stickler for the 'truth'? (But then is it the 'truth'...or just your perception of it? perhaps based on only what you have 'seen' rather than on the full picture).

Can I know the 'truth' about 'you' even if I don't know everything about you including your innermost thoughts? or vice versa?

Is it always wrong to lie? If the truth hurts would you prefer an outright lie, or a lie by omission where you are given 'half a story' to leave out the really awful bits?

Do YOU say one thing about being honest, but actually do the opposite? ( especially if you are adept at not getting caught!).

and, are some people so good at lying that they actually come to believe the lie lol, and when queried by someone who knows the truth are outraged because they 'don't remember it that way'!

Any thoughts my honest friends?

;-)

and while you think ;-) another bit of a song lol

"You ask me if I love you
And I choke on my reply
I'd rather hurt you honestly
Than mislead you with a lie"

Rose. Over the years, almost everybody has lied in my experience. It is part of life, it seems. Usually for reasons you give.

If you ever trawl through cv's before interviews, which am sure you have also done quite a bit of, you find all sorts of nonsense written down. Couldn't work out a 3 month gap once - it was prison. And for violence and drunkenness.

Will you be able to walk to work if your bike breaks down? Yes, no problem. Well, it would have been a problem unless I was interviewing Ken Matthews!!!

I claim that in most jobs we are encouraged to lie. We are expected to falsify statistics and it is incredibly hard to find any worthwhile job now where lying is not required. Do we believe school tables, truancy rates, unemployment figures?

My son Rob is the only person who always has told the truth all the time in my experience. If I ask him about girl friends, he neatly moves the conversation away. I dig elsewhere to find my facts. Although I notice that in last 12 months he has started fabricating the truth about not feeling too well occasionally to get to a rock concert. Better say no more :-D ;-)

lol John well you have caught me out on that one, I have on several job applications over the years 'lied' about my schooling, having been to....9 different schools, I have taken the easy way out and stretched the time at just two or three of them to fit, rather than have to put them all down ( we moved a lot, I wasn't expelled lol).

I find sticklers for the absolute truth as annoying as liars sometimes. Nitpicking over meanings and over-analysing exact wording seems a bit weird to me. Especially when it doesn't really matter that much.

I don't lie much, although I do lie by omission. I don't have it in me to hurt a friend's feelings with the absolute truth, sometimes. Especially when it really isn't a big deal.

I lied to my son about Santa and the tooth fairy but I feel no guilt.

Gwynne :-0 :-0 :-0 Why would you lie to your son about the tooth fairy and Santa???

Why on earth would you tell a little boy neither exists and then he has to find out the truth later on :-S :-S

Actually, I am not too sure any more. I have written last 3 years for a sports car and I keep getting a bottle of whisky instead. But I saw the map of how Santa gets round on CNN, so it must be true. :-) :-) ;-)

"Good evening, sir. The reason we have pulled yoo over to have a chat was that you were driving at 70mph in a 60 zone"

"You went through a traffic light on red"

"How much have you drunk this evening"

"I have stopped smoking altogether"

"My late parents were the loveliest people"

"Me and my spouse have never disagreed"

Hopefully you get the giste. Be interested to know first person on Genes to claim they never lie.:-) :-)

Apparently, it is alleged that we all begin to lie at about age 6.

That might be a lie of course!

I prefer tact to the blunt truth, eg 'that isn't really your colour/this dress looks better on you' as opposed to 'you look like a fat, ugly, jaundiced back end of the bus in that dress' ;-)

The occasional white lie to save someone's feelings, or to allow a child to experience something magical is fine. However, constant lies, including white lies, are not and I'd find it very hard to trust someone who was always lying.

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 5 Jan 2013 20:53

I can't abide blatant lies used to promote oneself or to turn the blame off themselves. However I think most people including me have told lies through their lives to make someone feel better, to make life easier or get out of a sticky situation. I would never lie if it meant someone would be hurt and get into trouble for something they didn't do.

Total honesty can be just as annoying or hurtful as blatant lying. As CAT says - tact is sometimes the answer.

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 5 Jan 2013 21:39

I'm not good at telling lies - too honest for my own good - I would get caught out pretty quickly

that's not to say I have never lied but usually to save someone's feelings, which I would call white lies

I would never let someone else take the blame for something I had done

Also to be a good liar you have to have an equally good memory or it'll come back to bite you on the bum - my memory is hopeless

Kay????

Kay???? Report 5 Jan 2013 22:08

kinks in truth often saves the day,

but cant stand people who twist the truth to make themsleves appear important.

Does my bum look big in this.........Yes it does..is the only way to go....... :-D :-D

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 5 Jan 2013 22:17

Not if you're a man Kay. They can't win - damned if they do and damned if they don't tell the truth about "The Big Bum".
