Germolene was a bit upmarket for us, my Gran used to use it I remember the smell from her house, we had Zam-Buc a green oitment in a round green tin.
Great stuff Zam-Buc except the edge of the lid was so sharp that if you didn't have a cut finger when you started, chances were you did when you had finished opening it, perhaps it was a clever plan to sell more!

Favorite smells, hot tarmac and a shop in Streatham high road that used to have a machine that roasted coffee in the window.

His name is George, he is about 18 now and getting rather frail, but as he is a little concerned about his public image I'm useing a picture taken about 5 years ago!

I have one just like him called Harry, he is a 16 years old rescue and he is adorable. He lives with my son and his family now, but walks towrads my car as I am driving down their drive and then walks alongside till I get out. He had cancer twelve months ago, and the operation cost me a fortune as we no longer had pet insurance everyone loves him, even the Vets sent a get well card.

Remember things we used for our kit in army cadets. "Blanco" ( a sort of green sludge) was the stuff we put on our belt and gaiters and brasso on badge and buckles.

And we used to have a grocery shop and hardware shop in our local centre. Both had such very distinctive smells which are nothing like smells in modern shops.

And we forget tobacco smells. All the men with their pipes :-D

John, lots of us know about Blanco and Bull having served in the Real Army as regular Soldiers. As for Pipe Smoke, You mean to say you liked it, ? My grandad smoked a Pipe, With "Twist "in it, the smell was so repulsive my Gran made him smoke it outdoors.

While we are on the subject, what have they done to TCP?.No smell to speak of, it doesn´t sting & there´s no yellow stain on your skin when you have used it.
I loved the smell of Quink too. Also like creosote.
No accounting for taste I suppose.

Yup I can sympathise with the cost of vets fees Paula, George has cost a fortune too he was a stray a neighbour took in but could not keep when she moved to a flat.

He developed a skin condition and was under the vet for 18 months or so it turned out he was allergic to house dust mite and human skin cells, he was a cat allergic to humans!

We bought a super-dooper vacuum cleaner gave him all kinds of drug, had to inject him with special stuff made up to order, just got worse poor chap, he had one of those lampshade collars on for months and months.

We finally said to his specialist (yes he had his own dermatologist) his quality of life was so poor so perhaps we should consider what was the best thing to do. She then suggested as a last resort we try him on Cyclosporine a drug used for human transplant patients to lower the immune system, OK we said he’s nothing to loose.
He was better in 24 hours and his skin healed up in less than a week! After a couple of years he was able to come off them completely.

He’s an expensive but sweet old chap with the loudest purr I’ve ever heard!

@ Wisechild I do so agree about TCP. My Mother used it by the bottle you could smell it as you walked down the path. I always keep a couple of bottles in the medicine cupboard, my niece age 37 visited just before Christmas, came back from the bathroom and said it just smells like Nannies house. :-D :-D I am not sure if I was flattered or flattened. :-D

As John says Ironmongers/hardware shops had their own special smell.
We still have an ironmongers but it's not quite the same smell these days, I expect it's the lack of leaking paraffin and all those banned chemicals like DDT that have disappeared now!

@Sylvia Do you remember Gibbs Dentifrice, in a little round tin, it was a hard paste and you rubbed your wet toothbrush on it to make a foam. I am sure I have not dreamed this one. :-S

Can,t beat the smell of freshly cooked Bacon and eggs in the morning though. :-D :-D Much better than the "Ah Bisto" Smell. :-D

wisechild Report 8 Jan 2013 14:48

No Paula, you haven´t dreamed it. I loved it when I was little. Also do you remember the smell of Izal toilet paper.
Those labrador pups can´t compete, although it was a bit harsh on the nether regions.

@ WisechildOh yes it was in little squares and had a shiney surface.

@ Merlin my nephew has been a vegetarian since he was 5 years old, now 42 and he says the only thing that tempts him is the smell of bacon cooking.

Talking About Germolene - Can anybody remember the smell of Iodine used on cuts and wounds ? If I can cast my mind back it used to sting like hell.
