Janene Report 7 Jan 2013 14:10

Hi there,

I have been researching my family history for a few years now and have just come across my great grandad was enlisted in the above. This was from Sep 1915 to 1918 where he apparently states he was medically discharged!

I just really would like to know whether he stayed in Australia or came back to the UK?

Frederick Henry Coppard b1883 Tonbride, m1909 Bromley......

Thank you for your help, this is amazing and so kind of you all.

Obviously there is a gap from 1925 to 1968 when he died in Bexley,Kent. Where would I need to look for the gap years? Could some-one help with pointing me in the right direction please.

GlasgowLass Report 7 Jan 2013 15:58

Hi Janene,
There are evidently a few men called Frederick Henry Coppard who were born around the same time.
In your opening thread it says that Frederick married in 1909 yet the Australian Military Record from 1915 ( widowed mother Eliza in Kent) states he was unmarried?
You seem to know that this man was your g grandfather, meaning that you descend from a child ( your grandparent).
Where and when was the child born? I am assuming that it was England before the enlistment in OZ?

Also, a man called Frederick H Coppard married Ellen K Barbour in Rochford 1924.

Another, FHC bc 1885 whose father was called Marshall Coppard. This one died shortly after being discharged from the British Army in 1915.

Are you certain of the birth details and the parents for your FHC?

GlasgowLass

GlasgowLass Report 7 Jan 2013 16:29

Think I am getting somewhere...
The man who enlisted in OZ was the son of William and Eliza.

His sister was called Eliza Jane Coppard, married William Yeates in Kent in 1903 She can be found with her mother and her children in Kent but is then found in SWAN, WA from 1916 onwards until her death in 1956

Australia Death Index, 1787-1985
about Eliza Jane Yeates
Name: Eliza Jane Yeates
Death Place: Western Australia
Age: 78
Father's Name: William
Mother's Name: Eliza
Registration Year: 1956

Estimated Birth Year: abt 1878

Janene Report 7 Jan 2013 17:45

He was married to my grandads mother (whom we fund out when he passed away that she put him up for adoption!).
I know that he was to Ethel Harriett Weeden/on in 1909 Bromley but later divorced 1921....
Court for Divorce and Matrimonial Causes, later Su... J 77/1816/6611
Divorce Court File: 6611. Appellant: Frederick Henry Coppard. Respondent: Ethel Coppard. Type: Husband's petition for divorce [hd]. . Divorce Court File: 6611. Appellant: Frederick Henry Coppard. Respondent: Ethel Coppard.
Date: 1921
It is so confusing and am finding it hard to find him!!!!

I see it now.
As his sister was in Swan, WA from 1916 onwards, and FHC seems to there at 1925, I can only assume that he was already a divorced man when he returned to the UK
( don't know how far in advance an Australian ER is prepared)

If the man who died in Bexley in 1968, is your g grandfather, then he is the same man who married Ellen K Barbour in 1924 as per info on UK Electoral Roll provided by Choccy.
