I grew up in a bungalow in Fareham, Hampshire, after marriage we lived first in two rented flats in old houses in Gosport, then in a basement flat (Naval hiring) in the beautiful Georgian crescent in Alverstoke Gosport, but that flooded when it rained so, with a young baby we were moved to another hiring, an old two bedroom terraced house still in Gosport. Those were all unremarkabel. We then bought a two bed bungalow in Fareham no central heating but thought of with affection as it was our first proper home, cost £2450 in 1962. We upgraded to a 3 bed house, still in fareham, nothing special, quite nice, on an estate. Then we moved to Essex, followed by Forest of Dean Gloucestershire, followed by Bedfordshire, all three bed houses, the last detached the others semis. Then in 1992 we moved here, back to Gloucestershire and this house is my favourite. This one is detached four bed and I like the layout, happy to stay here. Love the area too. Having said that I have liked all our homes, been happy in all of them because that is what they were, our home. :-) :-)

Hartley girl was called Myra. Sister Lynda. Father Jack Hartley who would have been same age as mum - born 1924/25. House was off Gillity Avenue - may have been Gloucester Road.

Myra was born early 1949, Lynda end 1950. Very small and pretty girls. Dad and mum were good looking too. So was my mum. My dad......had a lovely personality :-D

John you see the side of St Matthew's from Tantarra St, it's off Ablewell St almost directly opposite St Matthew's. It's very near Central Hall. It's where hideous concrete flats went up in the late 1960s. They've pulled a lot down and revamped the area again. All those streets in Chuckery were near Chuckery School, primary and secondary schools were on the same site.

Paula, I lived off Hollyhedge Lane and I often went to Reedswood Park and in summer the baths. Had an Aunt live in Reedswood Lane, that's the other side of the park, the entrance near the hill where the swings, slide etc were.

As children mum took us to Sutton Park, the Sutton entrance. We'd take a picnic and walk through the park to Streetly and catch the bus back to Walsall.

Just goes to show what a small world it is. :-)

I lived in Great Barr and went to school in Aldridge. An aunt lived just off Broadway North, very close to the Sutton Road junction. There is/was a pub on the island?

John The pub I refer to is the Fox & Anchor at Coven it dates back to the late . 1700's The current building is believed to have been built during the early 1960's after the original was destoyed by fire.

I can't recall the names you mention at moment, but give me time and it all comes back to me. :-S

My parents bought a house in Park Hall in 1963. Think it was then called Gillity Village, and near canal in Walsall, not far from Bell.. And you walked along canal to Sutton Road and the posh houses. Am wondering if Paula remembers a girl called HARTLEY - first name was Welsh but just cannot remember it. Her parents were Welsh from Colwyn Bay - father went to school with my mum. Ms Harlley would have been born 1947/48 period - hope that doesn't offend too much:-S

When mum and dad moved to Park Hall (Helston Road), we were all woken first few nights by cows. It is now concrete and brick everywhere :-) :-) :-S

Don't remember Chuckery much, Pat. But Tantarra St rings a bell. Were those streets round the back of St Matthews Church?

I was born in Walsall too. Know the 1st part of Sutton Rd by Springhill Rd. Had relatives in Lumley Rd, Walsingham St, Moncrieffe St, Florence St, Tantarra St (before the flats) and Chuckery Rd. Wonder if you know that part of Chuckery Paula?

I lived in the Birchills, not too far from what is now Junction 10 M6.

Have lived at several RAF camps in Lincs, Norfolk, Oxon, Wilts, Cornwall, Glous, Cyprus. No comment about that accommodation.

Had house in Chatham, 2 houses in Newark and 1 at Walesby, the Notts 1 and Cyprus. Best house was Walesby, best location Cyprus. :-)

Wallasey (when I was a baby so I don't really remember it), Cheshire, Wales, Wales, Isle of Man , Cambridgeshire, Cornwall, Somerset, Cheshire, Kent, Kent, Clwyd,Gwynedd,, and this is the third house in Shropshire lol .

I have very fond memories tied to the house in the Isle of Man and the location was wonderful, but as a house in terms of a house I would have loved to stay in and make a permanent home it would have to be the last one I rented in Shropshire, it was my ideal house with a bit of re-arrangement.

I like this thread, particularly now it is a Wolverhampton thread. Coven and Brewood have reminded me of two things.

One of my mum's best friends was Betty Morse. She latterly (1970's/80's) ran a pub in Coven. It was not the one mentioned - does "Rainbow" ring any bells? Canal?

And we nearly moved from Finchfield about 1958 to a lovely thatched cottage half way between Brewood and Bishops something. Fab little cottage - two old ag lab cottages knocked together with low ceinings and two staircases. It was next to a pub and bus-stop in a hamlet with Horse(?) in name. Just before we moved, roof collapsed - so dad decided to stay in Finchfield :-( :-(

Edit Cottage was next door to New Inn in Kiddermore Green

Quite like where we are, having lived there for 38 1/2 years.
Only our second property but having had two extensions added, converting it from three bedrooms to five, it's got a lot of our own input in it.
But must start de-cluttering.

@ Lynda me too Home is where the heart is

@ Merlin Like everywhere Brewood has grown over the years, very nice though and retains it's old world charm. We still used to go to The Oakley Coun try Club when my husband was alive. I went with OH went for lunch at the Fox & Anchor in Coven last summer, I had not been there for years it was good sitting by the canal watching the barges go by, and it was packed too..

I was born in Rosyth and have lived in Glencraig, Ballingry, Dundee, Perth, Iona, Dunfermline, Edinburgh, and for the past 22 years I have lived in the Bromley area of Kent.

My favorite place has to be the beautiful Island of Iona where I worked and lived in the Abbey there in the late 1960's.

I've lived in Castles and Palaces across the globe. Just wanted to get in first before "someone" nabs the idea, and goes into great detail of how great it was :-D

Anyway, real life, every house I have lived in has has been a happy house, from the smallest to the largest. have always thought the best house was the house I live in at the time.

Our favourite location was Mortimer in Berkshire. It had a real country village atmosphere where everyone looked out for each other, and reminiscent of my childhood area. We only stayed there about 3 years which is just as well as we'd have outgrown the house. Mother in law said that it was a 'Dolls House' but it suited us at the time.

We've lived in our current home in Kent since 1984 and are quite happy with it even if the near-by main road has got a lot busier and noisier since then. Even though as teenagers the children complained that 'there was nothing to do, and no late public transport', they now say they love the greenery and fields surrounding the area.

We've vaguely talked about downsizing, but hope we can cope here for many years to come.
