Your tombstone stands among the rest neglected and alone, the name the date have worn off the weathered marble stone. It reached out to all who care, it's not too late to mourn, you did not know that I'd exist you died....and I was born. Yet each of us are cells of you in flesh, in blood, in bone, our hearts contract and beat a pulse entirely not our own. Dear Ancestor, the place you filled some hundred years ago, spreads out among the ones you left who would have loved you so. I wonder how you lived and loved, I wonder if you knew, that someday I would find this place and come to visit you xx

And I am cut to ribbons on these brambles. I have stubbed my toe on the grave of an unknown Frederick Brown, who obviously didn't like me. I have fallen between two gravestones and bumped my knee. And trousers are covered in mud.

I must record everything left-handed because I have strained right wrist. And I must take as many photos as possible for my files.

Because, whether you are flesh of my flesh or no, I am not coming back.

I really like that, Gillian :-) And this one......

I saw behind me those who had gone and before me those who are to come.
I looked back and saw my father and his father, and all our fathers, and in front to see my son, and his son, and the sons upon sons beyond.
And their eyes were my eyes.

Ancestors

If you could see your ancestors
All standing in a row,
Would you be proud of them?
Or don't you really know?

Strange discoveries are often made,
In climbing the family tree.
Sometimes one is found in line
Who shocks the progeny.

If you could see your ancestors
All standing in a row,
Perhaps there might be one or two
You wouldn't care to know.

Now turn the question right about
And take another view.
When you shall meet your ancestors
Will they be proud of you?

These quotations are great, and sum up what I feel about my ancestors. It's quite a strange feeling when you manage to find a gravestone of an ancestor. I found that of my 4th great great grandparents, and returned later to leave them flowers and a message.
