My bird table is now small bird friendly.

I use our picnic table for the birds each winter, putting out all kinds of seed & peanuts, but rather than taking the larger seeds, corn etc. ,the wood pigeons & magpies stand & clear the peanuts.

So now I have stood nut & seed containers on the table as well as hanging them from all plant hanging brackets.

:-D there is now I very round wood pigeon, having cleared all the peanuts, standing looking hard at the ones in the container.

My next door neighbour feeds the pigeons all year round, in her back garden, and even buys special food for them.

Trouble is they will come into my front garden sometimes and stop the small birds from feeding.

We have around eight wood pigeons that visit the garden and polish off anything I put out for the birds.

I now just put the old stale bread on the ground, some on the bird table for the little birds and everything else is hanging in containers.

They are so huge they can barely get off the ground and have to do a two or three part take off. Ground to fence or washing line, then up into the tree and from there up in the air. They are usually joined by some little collared doves and recently some white doves and ordinary type pigeons have appeared. It's like pigeon central round here. M

We fitted a bird station in our garden yesteday and awaited our first visitors. The first to arrive was a squirrel, he has been back several times since. Quite a few wood pigeons, and several magpies. The station is made of wrought iron and we were advised that squirrels would not be able to get to the platform or reach the hangings baskets, but he has.... :-( any ideas how can we stop the squirrels please ???? :-S

Stick some Chilli Pepper in the food, it won,t affect the birds but Squirrels won,t like it.

Borrow my cats Paula :-D They go after squirrels but usually leave the birds alone.

LG Thanks for the offer. We have a cat she goes for te suirrels and the birds.

Paula - plaster it on the pole!!!! We have the ultimate - OH made it - wooden tray with a steel pole. Nothing can climb up that.

@ Chris this is has wrought iron pole its positioned away from anywhere that cats, squirrels et al could get to, but these little bighters have managed have it. To be fair it is so cold and snowed over at the moment I simply can't refuse the sqirrels a feed. ...........

I have always tried not to encourage birds as Mini hates them as much as she hates cats.....but since moving here (Sept 2011) we seem to have inherited a blackbird. Although not tame it has no problem popping in the door to pinch the dog biscuits. To stop it doing that I have tried to feed it else where away from the door and now the little blighter knocks on the door in the mornings when I am up for his/her morning food :-S
