Hi there

Does anybody know of 111 Union Buildings in Woolwich?

Was it an old workhouse?

I do hope someone can help me, thank you.

Which years are you thnking of? In 1871 Union buildings in/next to Union Street, St Marys, Woolwich appears to be mostly occupied by workers in the Royal Arsenal, but I can't see 111.

I can only see numbers up to 37 in 1881 and these are not part of a workhouse. Presumbly your family had left by 1881?

This is link to the Woolwich workhouse detials -

Charles Booth has an online archive which includes some references to Union Buildings which may be worth looking at

Chat on this link suggests that Union St/buildings would have been named after the union of England and Scotland rather than the workhouse

I do not know if it is of any help but in 1950s/60's there was a large area of old tenement housing in Woolwich, I know because my ex grew up there.

Oh really. In the 1881 census, they were no longer living there!!!

I have just read all the above and it looks like it wasn't the Workhouse.....

Think I need to research more.

Thank you for your help.
