Silvercrest, an Irish company, sold beefburgers to Tesco which contained 29 per cent horse meat.

An investigation was carried out by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, who working alongside the FSA, discovered that mainland Britain was part of the area affected.
More than a third (37 per cent) of the products tested in Ireland contained horse DNA, while the vast majority (85 per cent) also contained pig DNA.
Horse meat and pig DNA was found in 27 beef burger products. Another 31 foods, including cottage pies, beef curry pies and lasagne, were analysed, with 21 testing positive for pig DNA. Tesco have now taken the burgers off the shelves when they discovered they contained horse meat .
I understand that there is no danger to health from eating these products, but any food being sold which is different to what it states on the package is a course for concern in my opinion.

And it is not just Tesco, theirs was the highest but I am sure it also mentioned Lidl, aldi, Iceland and said that the only store with no horsemeat trace at all was M&S.

Go to France and they have horse meat restaurants.

It is for us an cultural thing.

No there should not have been anything other than Beef and the usual additons, no Pig or Horse.

I have no problem with eating horse meat, just like to know what I am eating.

There is a risk to health.

The whole point of the modern management of meat for human consumption rests on the unit id - the id on the packet can be traced back through the carcass to the ear tags of the animals in production. Pretty obviously if there are horse, pig elements in the product then there has been some wholesale fraud and the tracing regime has completely broken down.

Anybody who has any familiarity at all with business methods in eastern Europe should not be very surprised.

This was from a processing plant in Ireland.

The traces of pig dna would have come from the machinery used not being properly cleaned between different meats.

And where pig is concerned there are major health and legal ramifications around them. This is to avoid cross contamination and the spread of swine fever.

The amount of pig and horse meat was well above "trace" amounts caused by poor cleaning. In fact there are mountains of all kinds of illegal meat imported to the UK every year from all over the place, as far away as China and Egypt. As for "EU origin" it can mean anything. Large scale theft of deer, cattle and sheep for illegal slaughter is also a serious and growing UK problem which our ever shrinking police force has few resources to fight.

Add to the very poor practices of many eateries from trad pubs to ethnic and it is a wonder that food poisoning is not more of a problem than it is.

The Irish Republic is unfortunately an open door for the import of all kinds of dodgy stuff to the UK - bankers / money laundering, politicians, guns, illegal immigrants, meat, fake spare parts (especially aviation), stolen cars (usually from UK going out), food products, hooch, fake tobacco. The Garda are a miserable joke.

I believe that this will not be the only occurrence of foodstuff mislabelling.

I recollect a huge court case in Australia when it had been found that the Americans were buying what they believed to be beef-steak and it was found that they had been sold kangaroo meat. They had obviously enjoyed eating it for a few years so the big thing as far as I could see was that it was false labelling...

... and I don't really think these are isolated incidents.

"Dalepack", in Yorkshire was another supplier also" Liffy Meats" I wonder if it is anything to do with the "Profit Margins "and having to meet the low prices supermarkets demand from their suppliers?.Tesco did another "Booby" as well.They were having a "Shop Locally" in their store in Talbot Green South Wales,Using the "Scottish Flag" instead of the Welsh Dragon. :-D :-D :-D seems somebody does,nt know the Emblem of their own Country. :-D

I'm pleased to say that I would eat anything put in front of me if I've been invited out to dine but there are certainly things I would not buy for myself.

If my source is correct I think we should be concerned about eating beef which has come from cattle fed growth hormones for beef production purposes - I'm told that the USA did this but I'm not sure whether it's still happening. Perhaps someone could confirm this?

I had horse meat in Spain 28yrs ago and I rather enjoyed it....I don't do burgers etc and make most of my own food as I like to know what is in it...
