I have just put Sky News on and watched an investigative piece on a certain abatours ways of killing horses.....It was totally barbaric and upsetting to the core...

I just wanted to warn you if you dont want to get upset or shocked as I was please please do not watch it.....words fail me....

Some will ask on here why I woul put a thread up like this, well its for those who would be upset and perplexed as I was. Dont get me wrong I know what happens in such places but in this footage of this certain abatour is so so cruel.....

Its simply not right....yes I sobbed and wished I had not watched it !!!!!

I had a conversation yesterday and learned about the judus Goat. The goat is works at the abatours and leads the cattle in to the room, the other cattle see how calm the goat is and this then calms the other cattle, so they follow the goat unbeknown the goat is leading them in to their deaths, I said " why does'nt the goat warned them?" and was informed hence the term judus goat !!!!!!

It is important that animals are as calm as possible when slaughtered otherwise stressed meat tastes awful and does not sell. You can tell by colour and texture.

Used to be quite good at rejecting "black beef" at Tesco 40 years ago - not even sure I would recognise signs of poor abattoir practices these days.

In UK, we breed horses for different reasons and have centuries of tradition of not eating our trusted companions. I am sure we have turned to horse meat in times of national emergency, and we have always had jokes about Belgians eating horse and Koreans eating dogs. But those countries have probably bred those animals to provide meat. I would prefer to see the UK government ban the introduction of animals not specifically raised for meat from entering our food chain. And that includes retired racehorses and greyhounds.

Thank you for the warning Mersey....l will make sure l don't watch it, where as l may have if you had'nt warned me!!
l hope the abatour owners were fined,closed down and serve a prison sentence!!

Have just seen a French chef on Breakfast TV saying that the French mainly feel the same way as us in UK,and that it has to be bought in a special butchers and no way would you buy it in a Supermarket.
It brought to mind a school trip to Paris in 1951. We were still on strict rationing in the UK and meat was not on display in butchers shops.you asked the butcher if he had a certain cut and he would go to the back room and weigh you a piece he thought appropriate for the size of your family and take the coupons.
I was so amazed at the display of meat in butchers shops in Paris that I even mentioned it on the card I sent home to my parents.We were also given a steak in the restaurant we used....didn't like it much as it was covered in garlic which I didn't like then...do now....,but in later years it occurred to me that it was probably horsemeat as France had been occupied during the war and had suffered with worse food shortages than us.
I like to know what's in the food I eat and think that Supermarkets have a lot of questions to ask when they buy so much in bulk.
It's enough to make you a vegetarian.

Dont get me wrong I totally understand about such places and can understand why such things as done, also I have never thought twice about any meat I eat....was just the way this film was shown and it wasnt like normal abatours......to be honest I dont even know where it was I was beyond listening and eventually turned it off........

It was the way such animals were killed, .......

I have no malice to any abatours or killing of animals or anything like this if Im making sence its just the way that it was done, it simply wasnt right....It could have been any animal and I would have said the same thing.....

No animal should be treated in that way whether or not it was on its way to be slaughtered

I watched enough to see what the content was going to be.

We used 2 different abattoirs, the first our pigs were coralled with others and were getting distressed. The second the inspector was in the holding yard, having a break I guess and they weren't held but taken straight through.

We then used a slaughterman who worked from his house and the pigs and lambs were out of the trailer and killed within a couple of minutes. Our children watched aged 6,7 and 8. We asked them if they wanted to go and they said yes. A lesson in life that meat doesn't magically appear in clear wrap.

There is no excuse for killing any animals in that way. To have the animal in front of you stunned to the floor will drive the other animals mad. The old saying that 'you can smell fear' I believe is 100% true where animals are concerned.

Although being a vegi myself, I have no objection to people eating meat. I do however, have an objection to treating animals like this

I've seen plenty of horsemeat for sale in French supermarkets, particularly the Northern one, and plenty of French people buying it..

When I was a boy in the 50s I was often sent by my mother to buy meat, usually lamb chops, at the local Butchers Market. I remember it as a foul smelly place.

On one side of the market was a very large stall that always had a long queue on a Saturday morning. The banner over the stall read "Horsemeat for Human Consumption"

Tuberculosis, also known as consumption, was rife in our area. In my 10 yr old mind I assumed that everyone in that queue was suffering from TB, and I would always give them a wide berth.

So it seems that horse meat was widely available at that time, and many people ate it. I believe it was also free of rationing.

Nothing would induce me to eat the flesh of that noble animal.
