Did anyone else see the first of the new series of Yes, Prime Minister.

Written by the same writers, Jonathan Lynn and Antony Jay, the first episode was Tuesday night at 9pm on UK Gold. Will be on next Tuesday and next 4 Tuesdays. :-)

Yes, Sue. It gives me confidence I am not the only one who watches Gold :-D

OH watched it as he enjoyed the original series, and the re-runs.

When asked what he thought of the new series, he said "Not a lot".

In his opinion it wasn't as subtle, didn't seem to 'flow' and was more brash and 'shouty'. The character of Sir Humphrey was less polished.

He's not going to bother watching other episodes. :-(

I thought exactly the same as your OH Det. I found it rather boring and switched off after a while.

No, DET. Tend to agree with OH. It was much heralded and I was looking forward to it. Parts of it were very good, and I never expected the trio of Paul Eddington, Nigel Hawthorn and ? Foulds to be emulated as they were so perfect.

However, I shall certainly watch next weeks episode and expect to see the two main characters stop shouting at each other quite so much. And David Haig is a more believable Prime Minister than the hapless Paul Eddington.

I think he stuck with it to the end, hoping it would improve! As you both think that, (Edit - OH and Susan wiv) then the writers have lost there touch as they've got older :-0

I honestly thought the writing was as good as ever - they are very clever men indeed and age shall not weary them.

Storyline though not very strong last night, but Scotland, Europe and strains of coalition are on the horizon. Plus an attractive female in corridors of power.

Everyone says that Haig and Henry Goodman have amazing rapporte. But we didn't see the chemistry last night

I was looking forward to it because I have the original on DVD and they work just as well today as when they were created, but I gave up after seeing one episode very disappointing.

Not only was the writing of the original episodes good but the chemistry of the cast was I think the key to it's success.

Just goes to show remakes seldom work.

Hope one or two watch the second programme tonight. I was disappointed last week but thought it showed some promise :-)

Considerably better last night, I thought. The woman is particularly good. Still not sure if it will be worth watching right through and a bit puzzled why the second week was Episode 3.

I thought we were going to see the SNP come into the second programme and was really looking forward to that :-)

We absolutely loved the original series, bought the dvds and still watch them occasionally.


The script was pertinent and hilarious but the casting was out of this world and, personally, I don't think anyone could play Sir Humphrey as well as Nigel Hawthorne did.


I've only seen snippets of the new version and I can't say it inspires me any although it may appeal to a new audience.


I'll stick with the original I think.... :-D

Same here, Cynthia. Original series was wonderful. Very dated now though imho. No women in power, dealing with issues that are old hat. So never watch it on Gold, whereas I absolutely love Dad's Army and quite like Fawlty Towers still.

I did enjoy it last night and laughed a couple of times and I am warming to David Haig and "Sir Humphrey" came across much better last night. And I am looking forward very much to the Scottish First Minister (Robbie Coltrane) discussing the independence issue with Haig :-D
