Well been resisting em for years. Spent a fortune on caps and bridges to hold my teef together, remember mums teeth that spent all their time in a cup on the kitchen window sill , when she put em in her face changed and she wasn't our mum.

My lower front teeth although not rotten have bone loss and I have had to have two taken out cos they got so loose, They were splinted back in and were in the gums they belonged too . Been OK for about 5 months but one tooth is now flapping in the wind cos the gum has receded further and not holding it. seems a denture now is the only option . not happy

This Pam Ayres poem came to mind when I saw your thread title Shirley

Oh, I wish I’d looked after me teeth,
And spotted the dangers beneath
All the toffees I chewed,
And the sweet sticky food.
Oh, I wish I’d looked after me teeth.

I wish I’d been that much more willin’
When I had more tooth there than fillin’
To give up gobstoppers,
From respect to me choppers,
And to buy something else with me shillin’.

When I think of the lollies I licked
And the liquorice allsorts I picked,
Sherbet dabs, big and little,
All that hard peanut brittle,
My conscience gets horribly pricked.

My mother, she told me no end,
‘If you got a tooth, you got a friend.’
I was young then, and careless,
My toothbrush was hairless,
I never had much time to spend.

Oh I showed them the toothpaste all right,
I flashed it about late at night,
But up-and-down brushin’
And pokin’ and fussin’
Didn’t seem worth the time – I could bite!

If I’d known I was paving the way
To cavities, caps and decay,
The murder of fillin’s,
Injections and drillin’s,
I’d have thrown all me sherbet away.

So I lie in the old dentist’s chair,
And I gaze up his nose in despair,
And his drill it do whine
In these molars of mine.
‘Two amalgam,’ he’ll say, ‘for in there.’

How I laughed at my mother’s false teeth,
As they foamed in the waters beneath.
But now comes the reckonin’
It’s methey are beckonin’
Oh, I wish I’d looked after me teeth.

I have false teeth now after spending a fortune on bridges and capping etc.Must say I get on OK with top set,but bottom set is hard to get used to.
I suppose I did well keeping these as long as I did because I had radium treatment on my neck 62 years ago and was told it would ruin my teeth and soften my jaw bone .
My mum had a saying similar to yours.....Im as old as my tongue ..and a little bit older than my teeth.

Good luck with the dentures!! X x

shirley , this is what i dread i will try to keep my own teeth as long asi can. have lost a couple of back teeth due to bone loss. i have no loose teeth at the moment, just hope the deep clean i am due to have dosnt make any loose. my sister had to loose all her top teeth. she spent her redundancy money on implants £16,000 her new teeth look lovely. i would have opted for dentures being 60 + as my sister is. but every one if free to spend thier money as they wish. a good few holidays would have been my list...

I wish I could afford implants but am told they would be around 2 grand ! That's ridiculous amount for two teeth
Talk about grand distortion lol :-( :-(

That's something I dread too, so can feel for you Shirley. My gums have been receding for years, talk about long in the tooth lol!

My mother had gum disease when young and lost all her teeth, my Grandad apparently bought her a set of false teeth for her 21st birthday! (1937)

I know I have a loose one cos the dentist told me last time but am hoping it will hang on in for a while longer. What with dodgy teeth, specs and thinning hair, I am a great advert for my age, Not!

Good luck

Don't be afraid girls! I have had dentures for about 20 years now, never had a days problem with them and after years of gum and teeth problems, I was relieved to go down that path.. And nobody can tell if they are real or not!

Well its a 4 tooth denture URGH

The loose one and its companion are only splinted in anyway cos they were so loose they had to be taken out. Was told at the time it wouldn't be a permanent solution. They have lasted about 5 months. The teeth either side ie between the eye teeth ,have bone loss too .one worse than the other so they have limited shelf life. Rather than faff about having a two teeth denture then paying again when the other teeth play up have decided to go the whole way and have the two teeth out and settle on a 4 tooth .or maybe will have to be 3 tooth denture as the area is crowded.

Had impression done and next week go for another impression and tooth fit. .the following week will be the teeth out and denture fitted . Aint a happy girl :-(

I have visitors arriving today for a fortnight and one of my caps fell off last night. At least I still have it and the dentist can't stick it back on until Friday. Super Glue did cross my mind! Two weeks ago another cap fell off and I swallowed it but it doesn't show and at the end of the month the same two teeth are being replaced with implants (they are much cheaper here than in England). I used to have a denture with two teeth on and I hated it, half my food ended up underneath it. I replaced it last year with two implants and it is wonderful. I don't smoke, drink much buy expensive clothes etc etc so this is my treat to me.

It will be lovely to have friends staying for a couple of weeks and far more interesting than talking to the microwave....I hope.

Maybe I need to book a holiday to Tenerife and get em done whilst I am there and send the bill to the NHS

Tenerife Sun

Tenerife Sun Report 5 Feb 2013 13:03

People do come over for a holiday and get their implants done at the same time. The only problem is you would need two visits three months apart.

£2grand for 2 implants? are they second hand?(pre used?) Thats cheap, and it usually takes quite a long time to do, unless you have the other quick method where they are popped in with a rivet gun. :-( keep your own for as long as you can. :-D
