I can remember reading something like a monkey on the back of a man.must be over 50yrs ago.. :-0
I used to read a lot of Horror and fantasy story books in my teens.
H P Lovecraft my favourite author. The film "The Shuttered room" Did not do the book any justice.
Anyway to get back to the monkey, I dont believe it was one of Lovecraft's tales ,but it does ring a bell.
I`m pretty sure it wasn't a monkey but an old hag, or something like that or Troll or whatever . :-S
