GRANS PIGS SLAUGHTERED
OVER THE CAST IRON BATH

After the war my Pa kept a pig in pigsty at top end of garden. We lived in a mining village in the Black Country. Anyone who contributed food scraps also got some bits and pieces when pig slaughtered with a knife by the local barber. Pig was slaughtered on a trestle in our back yard and then hung in neighbours scullery and then cut up

My dad also kept a sow, sort of a pet really, and instead of slaughter , used to breed one litter a year to sell. She was fed meal and the household veg would be cooked up in a large saucepan weekly. What a revolting smell that was.! but she loved it, and also loved having her back tickled . Her name was Molly.

Piggy (Well the currant one :-D) lived in a sty at the top of our garden, fed on whatever was available. It is now illegal to feed pigs on household food waste, but ours did not seem to suffer & neither did we when we ate it.

IN 1940 MY GRAN WAS WAS MOVED FROM LONDON TO HERE,
SHE HAD HER FIRST GARDEN ,A HUGE ONE AT THAT,
DURING WW2
AT THE BOTTOM WAS A DITCH COVERED IN CAMOFLARGE NETTING
AND THERE WAS GRANS PIGS,
YOU WERE NOT ALLOWED TO KEEP PIGS IN THE WARTIME.
THE FOLKS IN OUR STREET WOULD BRING WHAT FOOD SCRAPS THEY HAD
GRAN KEPT NOTES ON WHO GAVE WHAT,SO WHEN THE PIGS WAS NEEDED AT CHRISTMAS ALL WHO CONTRIBUTED GOT SHARE IN THE PIG,

AND DONT ASK WHERE THEY SLAUGHTERED THE PIG
