Wend, do you mean discectomy? :-S

My daughter is having this operation tomorrow, after suffering pain in her lower back and leg for months. I've looked on here to see if there is anyone who's had the same op, but there's very little - Phyll's thread on 'Defrag' came up, but not the same thing lol!

Has anyone had this op and, if so, what was your experience?

I have done, Mr. M., but it's always helpful to hear other people's experiences. My daughter has been told that it may not be successful, which worries me.

A discectomy (also called open discectomy) is the surgical removal of herniated disc material that presses on a nerve root or the spinal cord. The procedure involves removing the central portion of an intervertebral disc, the nucleus pulposus, which causes pain by stressing the spinal cord or radiating nerves. The traditional open discectomy, or Love's technique, was published by Ross and Love in 1971. Advances in options have produced effective alternatives to traditional discectomy procedures (i.e. Microdiscectomy, Endoscopic Discectomy, and Laser Discectomy). In conjunction with the traditional discectomy, a laminotomy is often involved to permit access to the intervertebral disc. In this procedure, a small piece of bone (the lamina) is removed from the affected vertebra, allowing the surgeon to better see and access the area of disc herniation.

It does help if you hear from other people experiences.

Trouble is, she has 2 small children to look after, so it's going to be hard for her.

I did quite a lot of research into this operation and the reviews are varied,

I don't want to alarm you but being honest with my research,

For the people it worked for said it was fantastic, Others said it made no difference and the rest where left with bigger problems than before I also asked my doctor as i have had the same problem for years and both my doctor and the doctor who i saw when i did my ATOS assessment advised against it for pretty much the same reasons

My ex wife a size 10 and weighing 8 and a half stone had it done she still has the back pain as before and the medication has left her putting weight on, She has gone up to 15 stone in 12 months, Not a clue what size she is now and her doctor is very worried that she may end up with diabetes and heart disease

Edit, my post refers to lower back, specifically L5 S1 "Edited"

One thing I will say-it's not done unless absoloutly necessary & the result for me was I can walk. Hope all goes well.

So long as she does as she's told after (no bending & lifting for six weeks in my case) she'll be fine. I was home in 3 days. It's really not half as bad as it sounds Wend :-)
