Ties at school

Two of my grandchildren attend this school and I wasn't aware that they had clip on ties. I suspect they may have been introduced so that the youngesters all look reasonably smart. The trend at one time was to leave the top shirt button open and have the tie hanging below that with a huge, loose knot, which did look a bit scruffy. I don't have any strong feelings about wearing ties, clip on or otherwise. I think it is important to look clean and tidy at school but that can be done with or without a tie.

If a tie has to be worn for school,,,,,,a clip on is a much better option,,,,my G/Son in junior can do his own in a matter of seconds when dressing,,,,,plus anyone grabing by the tie it will just pull off and not present any danger......

young adults it should be an option.... also they are more likely to know that you can be strangled by a proper tie if you are attacked.

Many years ago in the 70's I was working in an office and a chap was using the shredder and his tie got caught and it was quite funny watching him trying to switch the machine off before one of us got to it.

But in all honesty he was really shaken up

It's a school rule, the tie he wore was obtained from a neighbour so not approved currently, end of story.

I agree that H&S is often taken too far, I'm just waiting for shoelaces to be banned in case someone trips up, or compasses to have rubber suckers instead if points!

However there is a valid reason to support clip on ties, I used to wear one at work in case it got caught in machinery and tieing something fairly tightly around your neck is really not a sensible idea anyway, just ask Isadora Duncan!

Reading the report they are wrong to cite health and safety for the ban on proper ties. It would be better if they said it was to promote uniformity so that all ties looked the same. My son wore a clip on tie when he was about 6 years old!!!!

I do think ties look smart, I wore one, my daughter and son wore one and my grandsons all wear them (I think Granddaughter might too now). But I have read about a school having the clip on variety somewhere before, can't think where though.

Whilst all in favour of school uniforms - I just do not see the point in school ties.

Many junior school now have no shirts just polo shirts as part of their uniform which look good.

Many many many years ago I worked for a well known supermarket chain and we were all issued with clip on ties

Agree Muffy, I think he is a very sensible boy and looks really smart, I would have thought a credit to the school.

All these silly Health and Safety rules, would like to see report of how many children have been strangled in school by ties.

As a female I used to wear a clip-on tie at work as part of my uniform. In later years it changed to a designer cravat. As the money got tighter all ties were dispensed with and we had open necked shirts.

When I went to high school many years ago we wore tunics and the usual playground prank was to ask someone 'what does a ship do when it gets into port'? The answer was 'ties up'. At which point the tie was flipped up by the offending prankster and then had to be replaced by struggling to get it back down the tunic without leaving a 'lump' stuck out at the front.- jl

I have never worn a tie. It was not part of our school uniform, neither was it a uniform item at the school where my daughters went, so it is entirely possible to adopt a neat uniform without a tie, but I wouldn't have an issue with a 'normal' tie if it was part of a uniform.

Whatever next! Hope they will ban the bhurka then too - pull that down and strangle the wearer easily too! No, that wouldnt be PC would it?

If a child in my daughters school hasn't got their tie tied correctly they're made to re tie it........and if caught with it askew again they're given detention. That soon stopped the trend lol.

As for the *peanut* thing..her school is open plan...anyone seen to be doing that would be immediately sent to isolation...

It just doesn't happen anymore because it's not worth the consequences.

Outside of school of course the rules change and the trend seems to be for those so inclined to make a statement...to walk down the road with their tie on their heads like a bandana..... :-S

**edit...maybe I'm old fashioned Joy but i like to see children wearing blazers and ties to school...I think it looks smart and and with relation to the ties NO CHILD likes wearing them that I know of..but it's good discipline for them to get used to wearing them and learning to knuckle under a bit...

i think ties are dangerous at schools
the only reason our head teacher had when challenged as to why the children had to wear them
was because the men reading the news wore then ????
so i pointed out the ladies reading the new didnt

so it was a sexist answer ;-)

The only person I know who wears such a tie is an adult man who has learning difficulties and finds the clip-on a tidier alternative.

I don't know of any schools which have adopted clip-on ties as uniform.
I agree that there could be a safety issue in science lessons and when working with machinery, but the implications for all-round safety at such times should form part of the lesson and training.

There's always the few who think it funny to 'peanut' a friend - that means pulling the tie tight and half strangling the victim. Its not something that your own children will necessarily tell you about.

In some schools there is also the custom amongst the students to tie a 'proper' tie in a daft way such as having the thick end ending about 6 inches below the knot with the thinner long end tucked out of sight.

Presumably the student in the article is one of the more responsible students, but the school rules have had to cater for the rest.

It was a problem with my children when at school and the grandchildren don't have a problem either. Maybe the problem is with schools with problem children who know no better.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2278480/Schoolboy-13-excluded-lessons-breaching-health-safety-rules-wearing-traditional-tie-instead-clip-version.html

My daughter wears a traditional tie and not clip on to her school....there's never any health and safety issues with it?

I thought school was in part to prepare children for real life....and I don't know any man who wears a clip on tie to work....anyone else think this is daft or am I missing something?
