Absolutely agree....my FIL was underweight and assumed he was healthy....but what he didn't take on board was that his cholesterol was off the scale and eventually he died from a sudden heart attack.

My mum...bless her...is overweight....BUT she eats very well..is diabetic so REALLY has to watch what she eats but her overall health is much better than FIL's ever was....his problems were of the silent but deadly variety.

I was always a skinny child, couldn't tell you what I weighed before the age of 15, wasn't until I had a medical for my first job (aged 15) that I learned I weighed 8 stone, over the years my weight never went up or down (only increasing in pregnancy,5 times) but always returning to the 8 stone mark.

It is only in the past 5 years that my weight has inceased & this is due to me not being as able bodied / mobile as I used to be,not because of over eating.
No longer can I clean the house from top to bottom in 1 day, or go into the garden & dig over the ground, plant things, paint the garden shed all in just a few hours, my body won't let ne,I still do those things (in a fashion) but it now takes me weeks rather than days to get the tasks done.

I have always cooked from scratch & still do, eat just one main meal a day (tea-time) stews, soups, salads, various meat / fish dishes,I don't do breakfast (never have) just a cuppa, & maybe a sandwich at dinner times, very very occasionally we might treat ourselves to a battered fish from the chippie, once or twice in a year!

I have never smoked & I don't drink alcohol (except the toast at a wedding) hate wine,I don't eat biscuits or chocolate, rarely eat sweets,I don't eat out & have never been inside a Macdonalds.

If was to visit to the Dr he would point out that I was overweight & suggest that I should perhaps go on a diet & eat the more healthy foods......like what !!
I get rather cross when people remark that because someone is on the large size ( "fat") that they MUST be eating "junk" foods all day every day!!

Joan.

Dear Ann in Cardiff

Hello

At my GP practice, there is a doctor who is severely overweight.

However, he insists on telling all of his patients THEY are overweight
and should diet. He keeps referring to the BMI index.

He said that to me. I saw another GP there, who couldn't stand for laughing.

I have seen plump GP coming out of the local bakery, clutching a danish pastry and creamy coffee.

Pots and kettles. :-D

Take gentle care
Best wishes
Elizabeth, EOS

i think rations should be brought back for the staple things. junk food and drinks should be taxed to the hilt. it would help people get back to cooking from scratch. the instant food barons have made mega money, our health suffers while they put crap into the food chain. a wake up call for all of us.

suppose main problem is kids having kids - they have no idea how to cook a meal from scratch cos no one has ever taught them - grandmothers are getting younger - some in their thirties - I can only see the situation worsening
