I am a bit worried that if we want fresh beef its going to go up. Apparently, there has been a rise in fresh produce due to the "horsemeat" fiasco. Not that anyone should be surprised really as its common sense. So what they are saying is if we don't want to buy readily prepared meals, which may or may not be contaminated and which will need to undergo various expensive tests to say they are contaminated, but not harmful to humans - someone has to pay so lets put beef up. Is this right? or will people stop buying beef altogether and buy cheaper meats. They say its best to buy organic or locally sourced meat but these are already beyond some of our budgets.

I reckon there ought to be more Rabbit farming done in this country.
Far more healthier meat than Beef or Pork and Chicken etc..

And they are more prolific breeders, and still cheaper than the other aforementioned animals.

The last one I had (christmas time) freshly killed and prepared, ready for cooking £3. :-D

I'd love to buy farm shop meat........but it's way out of my price range.

I am already using different cuts of meat to cut costs..pig cheeks for example are blinky lovely in a stew.....I get them from Morrisons....and i'd NEVER have tried them before lol

What sensationalism by the media yet again... "Contaminated" with what! Horse meat? this is not a contamination, its an additive,
(Contamination sounds so much more newsworthy though, does it not).
What a load of BS. those products were no more "contaminated" than your lowly Donor kebab meat .

I'd eat horse rather than a grotty Donor kebab anyday :-D

...I couldn't find a breast of lamb for love nor money at the weekend - and there's usually a couple hanging around (too fatty for a lot of people)

Of course its classed as contaminated.....

as this product has not been passed for human consumption ....its an un-labled ingredient that the consumer is unaware of.......

so an ingredient thats passed all stringent tests is mixed with something that hasnt,,,,,,,the safer of the two has been contaminated.

Old horses, past their best, pumped full of 'enhancing agents' to make the resultant meat more tasty/edible after they have been slaughtered and then put on the market for human consumption?

I dread to think what kebab meat is :-P :-P. I have a friend who reckons it is made from old leather gloves :-D.

no shortage of quality meat here as we have 2 Butchers in the family :-D

I made a lasagne last week using beef mince.
Offering some to my daughter's boyfriend, he wanted to know if it was made by Findus.
My daughter informed him that her mum had made it fresh from scratch.

Quick as a flash, my youngest piped up.... "Oh Mum! not Scratch, he was my favourite horse"

I agree farm produce and meat is way too expensive for the average Joe. But what are our options? I think its true also abt the labelling of it would we be inclinded to buy, cook and eat if it were labelled properly? Would it bother us that much afterall it is fit for human consumtion. I have double standards here I dont mind a cow, a sheep or a pig being killed for meat for me to eat yet the thought of a horse I couldnt stomach (pardon the pun). Are we too fussy given what meat is eaten in other pqrts of the world? Im not sure we are. Course in some cultures the meats we eat are revered or seen as unclean and the thought of eating them would appall them.

It was found,,,,,,,,,there was no risk to public health with the low amount of drug found in the horse meat,,,,,,,,,,,but it hadnt been declared by public health fit for human consumption therefore prior to it being introduced to the beef,,,,would have been declared unsafe,as there is no legal paperwork to say it is........
