Hayley, Rabbits like Carrots, :-D :-D

Only had supermarket Rabbit once,the meat was virtually white and it came from China if memory serves me right..
I never salted any of the fresh kills I have had, they need to be a lovely shade of pink to be at their best as far as I know. :-)

ate loads of rabbit and hare during the war - my Dad used to shoot them, along with pheasant and pigeon - only drawback was making sure you spit the pellets out

OH loves rabbit, which is eaten a lot here. Personally I find it completely tasteless compared with the rabbit my gran used to cook when I was a child.
I suspect that the ones we get now are farmed.
As for contamination, I agree that the definition has been misused, but I suppose that if a product contains something it´s not supposed to, it has been contaminated.

When I was a child, my grandfather and his brother had greyhounds as did many of the other miners in the village, hare and rabbit hunting were a regular pastime for them, I can still remember my Gran's rabbit stew.

As to ready meals, I have lived on my own for the past 25 years and I buy a lot of them. I will be 70 this year and they do not appear to have caused me any harm, and I don't think if I stopped using them now it would extend my expected life span.

Going off topic - the only thing that would affect my expected life span is the current and proposed policies of this confused coalition government as they are daily making me regret I had been born.

My partner made the comment the other day about this 'scandal'

anyone who grew up in the late 60/70's ate so many additives in their food that the horsemeat is not going to make any great difference

More unnatural additives /chemicals used then.

I have not changed my shopping habits - my food tasted OK - trotting off to the shops later ;-)

Oh and I forgot those brought up even earlier all the DDT on the veggies!

so i will shop there if need be
but i prefare to shop at bowlams who slaughter their own meat

I think the problem is the Government are worried about the after effects,For instance, Too much Horse Meat and The Local farriers will have increased work to do,(You will go there to be shoe,d) and the local shoe shop will close :-Dthen again , :-D The thought of a "Horses Neck" to quench my thirst seems quite good. :-D :-D :-D :-D

I won't be changing my shopping habits either.
Since the BSE fiasco, I place full trust in British Beef.

My only niggling doubt about this recent revelations, is not knowing exactly how horses are raised for the food industry.
What are they fed on or if they have been injected with anything sinister!
Other than that, burgers tonight I think!

The problem is, perhaps, not so much that there is horse meat in the food but more that they didn't say so on the label. I've knowingly eaten horse meat in France in the past (and very nice it was too); well, that was what it said on the menu!

But, if they said that frozen lasagne was made from horse rather than beef half the population wouldn't eat it. Mind you, what they have against those nice cows that makes them happy to eat cows but not to eat horses, I know not.

However, they didn't say horse on the label and they passed it off as beef. That's not so much a health issue as straighforward fraud.

BTW, anyone know what the 'meat' is in a 'meat curry'?

Horses in France (especially) are farmed for their meat

The problem comes about from animals which are not farmed for their meat - ex racing horses and pets who are treated differently.


Depending on where you buy your 'meat curry' it could be anything from Beef to Goat - usually though if it just says meat it will be a mixture of meats.

i hope all the instant food manufactory firms go to the wall..same as fish from the chippy, it states fish and chips, what kind of fish are they using. when it dosnt state cod, haddock or whatever. fish like beef could be anything in disguise. a big wake up call for all of us.

I think if it were labelled correctly then we would have had a choice to buy and eat or not. Me personally I eouldnt choice to eat horse I would decline but I dont eat offal but I choose not to because I dont like it. It doesnt mean the choice should be taken away from those who choose to eat it.
