Have spoken to She; and yes, the video used to be on the home page of GR. So it will be somewhere in the site still.

Sue, If the enquiry is sensitive then it usualy includes into about living people and that should be stated at the outset

The enquiry should also be on find living relatives board and not the find ancestors board to save any confusion

I ask for help on Find Ancestors but have mentioned before on GR that I do receive and give help via pm, email or FB.

Once of the reasons is that the information may be quite sensitive and isn't for all and sundry to read.

As long as any request isn't made both privately and on the boards, therefore wasting peoples' time, I cannot see the problem.

If I'm offered help via pm, I'll take it :-D

Gee Report 20 Feb 2013 19:26

Good point Roy

PMing 'help' limits the 'objective' help to just one person, the more people that help gives a broader view

In the past, I’ve seems some helpers give totally wrong info, if the receiving person is new to this, they may take that info as 'red'

Help via PM was not talked about on that Video, so not relavant in this case, She clearly stated for people to go to the community boards for help/advice where she or someone like her will be their to help

I don't care how I help or get help Sylvia, and not everyone wants to be part of a community.
I often ask for help on here, but I also ask help from elsewhere, depends on what it is I want help with, and how long I can stay on here. I am passionate about my family history, but appreciate some people just want to drift in and out of it, so how we do it is up to us, there is no right or wrong or wrong way, it's completely up to the individual.

By the way I understood Susanne, and well done to her for doing the video :-D

Jonesey should have offered his help with his 'Tip of the Day' info

I guess he doesnt want us to know, just how 'old' he is ;-)

Joy, It was just a thought. I'm sure you are right. I never saw the video, but distinctly remember seeing her on TV.

I found Susanne fairly easy to understand, she did speak quite fast and that meant I lost a couple of words at the end of her sentences sometimes. But otherwise her voice was clear. Her working area was a lot tidier than mine though. Well done Susanne.

Sue, the video definitely used to be on the home page of GR.

Also, there was an article about She in Your Family Tree magazine; maybe at about the same time that the video was made?

I seem to think that Sheila Wray appreared on a TV programme which I saw quite a few years ago to talk about her family history (though can't remember what programme) and wonder if this is getting confused with a video she supposedly made for GR.

Could the Team with the permission of the member include their board name as it would save any confusion as to who they are.

If She Wray did a video, sorry can not remember it, then the statement by GR is incorrect.

I think the point about posting on the boards is that they are 'Community' boards, where members help each other out by working together......as a Community. If people are helping purely by pms, then it defies the very nature of the boards.

There are often comments from the regular, experienced helpers on here, to the fact that they prefer NOT to receive pm's when helping someone as it complicates the issue for them - unless the info is of a personal nature of course.

I do a great deal of pm'ing because of the messages I send to advise people of their replies but, other than that, I would imagine the majority of pm's is of a personal nature - between friends.

Kense

Kense Report 20 Feb 2013 09:02

According to the figures GR used to put on the front page, there are about ten times as many PMs sent as messages are posted. So I suspect helping by PM is a lot more common than helping by the boards.

Obviously the boards excel when disseminating information of a more general nature.

Susanne aside, I don't think it matters if you don't post on the boards or not, you can help/be helped via pm's, I've often had pm's from people I've never seen on the boards.

As for who's on your tree, we all do it differently :-D

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Feb 2013 01:44

It's SuSanne, not SuZanne

just one of the many confusions with names on here

I do know who she is ..........

she does post on the Boards, and has complained about the other helpers on several occasions

......... but she does not help on the Boards .................. think she sends pms secretly behind the scenes.

I did not like her Hot Tip ..................

"put everyone's names in your tree .............. cousins, siblings, their children"

Living people should NOT BE ON TREES in the public arena.
