One of mine was a judge, several were policemen ... their names come up quite often in family history criminal criminal records, heh heh.

As well as FMP Ay also has criminal records complete with record scans while "The Times" archive is a great source too (not free).

One of our black sheep committed the heinous offense of running a "gaming parlour" ( bingo ) in C19 Leicester. For that he got a year's hard labour and died shortly after release. Most of his children emigrated to New Zealand, one to the US and one stayed home.

In the same ilk my maternal grandfather was a successful bookmaker who employed "runners" for off course betting, then illegal. I could almost remake his diary from the many convictions ... he just thought of them as a business expense. The Catholic church never objected to his donations anyway.

Another was rather fond of his tipple and after a specially crazy return home with his truck damaging several "motors" - he got 6 months. This made life very difficult for his policeman nephew. It didn't stop him making a fortune in the trucking business though.

Another one is in the Australian parliament though I don't think it counts as criminal except with the voters. ( Australian politics make their rules football game look as tough as a nursery party. )

Not a blood relative thank goodness but one my links to Lincolnshire revealed a nurse who murdered her care home guests, forging their wills. She was hanged.

I have a man in my tree who was hanged for murder!

Not a rellie of mine, he married a distant cousin.

One of mine, an 18 year old female got 6 months hard labour for larceny, another, a 21 year old male was imprisoned for 8 years for larceny.

No idea what exactly they did as yet, still investigating them.

found the newspaper article and it turned out that whilst working in the fields another man had accused him of not working hard enough
so he skewered him with a pitch fork

We all love a bad guy in our tree. I have a real doozy in my tree but I haven't found a murderer yet :-0

A friend is mildly interested in his family tree. His aunt is the main researcher in his family.

She sent him a copy of a newspaper cutting, with a short note explaining how he is related to this man (something like a 3xgreat-grand-uncle).

It seems that someone was ringing bells (church bells?) and the "uncle" was fed up with them, bong bong bong........... so he battered down the door, found the bellringer, chopped his head off and gouged out his eyes.

Yikes.

Must admit........ I've love to see the newspaper cutting :-)
