Yahoo this morning
"Tesco is the UK's least popular supermarket - and Waitrose is the most liked - according to a new survey.

Waitrose received an overall satisfaction score of 82%, including five-star ratings for its customer service and the quality of its fresh produce.

Meanwhile Tesco scored just 45% - placing it at the bottom of the poll of 11,492 people by consumer watchdog Which?"

Aldi and Lidl were second and third and Morrisons were not much above Tesco.

Waitrose are an excellent company and would probably be choice of many of us if we could afford them.

Tesco have had enormous problems since Terry Leahy handed over to Philip Clarke a couple of years ago, but they seem to be steaming ahead again since just before Christmas. Notice shares are now about 370p and they were close to 300p at one point last year.

I suppose the resuilt depends very much upon who was asked.

Target your response group and you are easily able to sway the vote.

I very much doubt that waitrose is The UK's favourire supermarket

Who conducted the survey?

Not a surprise to me John, would not use their stores because in the past they have bought land and done nothing with it, it was to stop the competition from opening stores there. There is one opening April only a very short walk away and I will not go in there. They are like a rash and they are everywhere.
OK rant over.

We use Waitrose most of the time, Co-op rarely now cause their veg are awful and they don't have some of the products we use. Lidl's sometimes and would use Sainsburys more if we had one. M&S on occasions:)
Don't like Tesco's. never have!

I think Waitrose may be the 'favourite' but doesn't mean that most people shop there. Perhaps some think it's better because it's perceived as being a bit 'upmarket' or more expensive or has fewer stores in nicer locations, or is part of John Lewis, which is well regarded.

I like Waitrose but haven't got one locally, but there are 2 about 10 miles away, in different directions.

When I was at college many years ago my lecturer in economics and statistics told us you can make surveys say what ever you want them to say.

He cited the example, that if you wanted to say that Ford was the most popular make of car on the road, all you needed to do was do a survey outside the Ford plant at Dagenham at the plants starting or finishing times ;-)

Lololol the headline is an attention grabber just as spoken about on Ann's newspaper thread.

The content of the post disappoints after the interest generated by the topic.

I just wish Tesco were finished, they are the worst supermarket for deceptive shelf pricing. Putting special offer tickets for one size of red salmon for instance directly under the wrong size can. Unless you carefully check unwary customers will pick up the item expecting a discount only to discover at the checkout that the size picked up is not discounted.

In the three meat for £10 cabinet they sneak in much more expensive cuts so customer again may well choose 3 items and be charged £12/£13

As I can add up mentally as I walk around I know to within 50p what my bill should be, so they were always told to shove those products and I complained at customer services.

Haven't shopped there for a year as Asda deliver to my area now.

Tesco are just licensed to deceive.

ErrolSheep Report 20 Feb 2013 13:04

I hardly think a survey of 11,492 people merits the thread title.
A survey of a small number of people certainly doesn't sound the death knell for any particular supermarket.
It should also be noted that the survey was carried out some four months ago.

Merlin Report 20 Feb 2013 13:11

And they,re not just into selling food, there,s Banking ,Mobile Phones and lots of other things they are into,However with their Pricing System in the shops(They go up and down like Yo yos),they must think their customers are all idiots,Which they are definately not. :-|

AnninGlos Report 20 Feb 2013 13:12

We shop at a large Tesco, not had any problems, we stopped going to sainsbury's because they always had horrendous queues and din't do anything about it. Also had a terrible exit from their car park at peak times onto a very busy roundabout. Tesco (the one we go to) have a huge car park, the veg is always excellent and, as long as you watch the pricing - as Sue says - it is fine.
We did have a try the other week of returning to Morrisons that we used to go to and the veg was atrocious. when in the L District and Bridport we always shop in Morrisons and the stores are great.

I think, as far as the stores go, it is the individual stores which vary, not the corporate stores.

Asda is fine if you have a good one conveniently near, we don't, Waitrose is great if you don't mind paying a bit more and have one locally, we don't. Not shopped in Aldi or Lidl.

PigletsPal Report 20 Feb 2013 13:23

If Tescos is the only supermarket in your area that is where you will shop

Waitrose is not the easiest place to shop as they do not appear on all high streets, you don't find many in Woolwich, Peckham and Camberwell.

We have a Morrisons near us which we use occassionally but I do not like their foodstuffs - what there is of it. It is a large store but the Fresh food is restricted to a few isles the rest is homewares, off sales and frozen/tinned food.

Sharron

Sharron Report 20 Feb 2013 13:29

The size of the sample is not always important.

As market research was explained to me was that, should you need to have a blood test, the doctor doesn't pump out the lot, unless he particularly doesn't like you. rom the teaspoonful that he hashe can have a pretty good idea of what the rest is like.

Or,if you have a slice of cherry pie you have apretty fair idea of what the rest of the cherry pie tastes like.

Generally respondents are filtered out to ensure that there is no bias in the result.
People would want to know why they were outside the age group required. Generally it is not because their opinions are not important but because they are not part of the group whose views are being sampled. For example,it would be a waste to interview teenagers about denture powder or pensioners about jeans because, whereas they might buy them they are not the target customer.

Market research is expensive, paid well, and it would be very wasteful for a client to commission a survey that did not give them an honest answer.

Elizabeth2469049

Elizabeth2469049 Report 20 Feb 2013 14:41

I used to be a market researcher (in the clipboards going from door to door age). In order to get a proper cross-section we were always given a quota of various requirements - age, sex, occupation, with items such as children in household thrown in if the client asked for them. One company had "interlocking" quotas i.e. there had to be a crosssection of each requirement - meaning you couldn't say go to an area of retirement bungalows and get all the men in the quota being over 65!). And the questionaires were so phrased that you could'nt possibly guess until perhaps the very end who the client was.

Unless a survey lives up to these standards the results are bound to be flawed.

Much of these surveys seem to be done on line these days - with the obvious flaw that the respondents must all have access to computers!!

Waitrose is far from my favourite supermarket.

I was offered £20 + free delivery on my first on-line shop, so thought I would give them a try. First & last!

Every day items were more expensive.
Green vegetables, trimmed to look fresh
Extra large chicken, must have been on a diet as not as much flesh on it as the ones I have purchased in other stores.

I find Tesco's, Morrison's,Aldi, Lidl & Asda on par with each other & all about the same distance from me. Marks & Spencer's is very expensive & their produce no better than anywhere else.
Sainsburys is closest & they always have a good selection of good quality fresh vegetables & fruit.
We do have an Independent Supermarket a few miles away, produce is local where possible & it has a very friendly atmosphere, but I do not use regularly as it does cost a bit more to shop there.

terryj... pork loin is usually £9 a kilo round here

In a market town not far from me there are at least 4 Tesco's. I rest my case, well for a while maybe.

Ronald Report 20 Feb 2013 20:26

I get our veg off the town market and not only cheaper than the supermarkets but fresher too!

Few years back had some spuds off a stall I used every week. Spuds not so good. When at the stall the fol week the stallholder said he didn't reckon the previous weeks spuds and gave me 7lb free-I'd not said a word.

Once at another stall I used regularly I'd forgotten to visit ATM first and when it came to I didn't have enuff money to pay. No problem says lass on stall - give us money next week.

Not any supermarkets could do that sort of thing

Had to rush out this morning after I posted OP. It was an official Which report about supermarkets. No idea how they select the 11,000 people they asked.

Tesco have had a dodgy time, but I do believe they have got back to winning ways since before Christmas and I wonder if the poll was done quite a few months ago.
