There is some sort of movement that believes in "wild burials" in any place that catches their fancy. They say that the use of cardboard coffins is ecologically sound. Nothing about bodies being buried in unexpected places.

I am dubious that this is legal.

Long ago thrifty Brits just rented a coffin for the occasion which was then returned to the undertaker, the passenger being dropped off so as to speak.

Another wheeze from a long ago Chancellor was to demand that all people were to be buried wrapped up in a woollen shroud. This cost a fair bit and was unpopular. Priests had to enter "buried in woollen" in the burial registry. Those going in for the coffin rental scheme were entered "buried only in woollen" from which you may work out either (a) the family was not well britched or (b) the late person was unpopular.

What do they use these days for a free council burial? I would have thought cardboard would do fine, the material can be very strong. It can even be used to make bicycles.

The aim of the acts was to lessen imports of fabrics from overseas and to boost the home wool industry.

The well off forked out the fine of a fiver to be buried in linen or whatever else they wanted.

Have had my blanket on nearly every night for the last 12 months, I love it.

BarbinGlos - look at the prices for a wicker coffin - its really expensive

I wanted to prepay for an eco funeral, and to be honest it was just too expensive.

So thought sod it - let the council put me in a paupers grave - I will be long gone and will not care.

cardboard coffins have been used for a while, usually for cremations.

If I remember correctly, Barbara Cartland was (buried?) in one.

My local one has a massive range of private cars with private plates. ( Is 6 massive? )...it is for our village !, a Porchse, a Merc, a Pink Classic Mini ( for his girlfriend) a Maserati not sure on the others :)

I 'd go for that one in the advert , provided hubby has space in the shed for it until required. ;-)

We had a wicker coffin for my Dad as it looked less morbid than the wooden ones - cost about the same - nearly had a cardboard one decorated with Welsh flag but chickened out! You can have pretty much anything on a cardboard coffin it seems.
All these were available at a regular funeral director's, much to my amazement.
