Last Sunday we had our step grandson coming to stay for a couple of days. He likes the PC but has learning difficulties so will random click and can lock up the PC by putting in passwords that he has no idea he has done SO to be on the safe side I logged my PC out and turned it off. Tried to open it up on Monday and it was dead!!

Had had some error messages the last month saying the PC was closing down cos there was an error that could cause problems and it did a physical dump of memory . just leaving to recover for a few mins it would open up again

PANIC when it wouldnt cos I do online banking etc and have an extensive FTP as well as loads of stored family photos and census. I do have an external hard drive that backs up the files but as my PC is XP i couldn't get anyone to tell me if my back would be OK if i had to buy another PC with say Windows 8 on it.

Have been accessing Genes via my I Pad.

I bit the bullet and got a local PC repair man to come in yesterday to take a look at it . he thought could be the power /transformer and couldnt do anything on site so took it away.

Hallelujah its was the transformer and he replaced it .cost £70 which is well worth it . He cleaned the PC inners of all the accumulated dust and did a review too of it opening up as I had too many programs that opened up on start up which was slowing it down.

So one very happy lady to up and running again and still have all my stored pictures etc

There is a way to keep your stepson from being able to get near your files.

His own bit with no access to admin... you may have done that already.. my Grandchildren cannot alter any of my settings.

Thanks Carol I dont have him to stay that often so haven't put child locks in place. he has been a pain so his local child minder he went too after school and in the hollies has given notice that she wont have him any more. Its complicated with his mum but wont go into details , just say that he has two different behavior criteria which doesnt help him .

Daughter has had to reduce her working hours so she can be at home when he gets there after school but we are playing by ear on the half term holidays etc. for the moment to see how it works out.
