Family members are urging us to claim against miss-selling of Payment Protection Insurance taken out to cover a mortgage.

Digging out the paperwork to complete the DIY claim form, the insurance is called Mortgage Repayment Insurance on the mortgage statements. Haven’t yet found the actual Insurance policy.

Does anyone know if MRI is the same as PPI or is it a lost cause?

You lose nothing by trying, if you did not ask for it, or need it because you had good life insurance elsewhere that would have covered the mortgage repayment.

I claimed back from 4 small loans & with the interest they had to pay me, got back a good sum.

Go for it, good luck

:-)

When we took our mortgage out.......circa 1996 we were sold the Mortgage Repayment Protection Insurance without it being made clear to us that we were free to buy from someone else if we so chose...in fact it was just tagged onto the mortgage without fanfare.

On the back of this we claimed PPI just by ringing our mortgage provider and filling in a short questionaire.

I don't know if if Mortgage Repayment Insurance is being treated in the same as Payment Protection Insurance, I think in some cases it is.

If I was you I would make a quick call to the Citizens Advice Bureau or if you are a pensioner Age UK.

Disclaimer: I am providing the link below for information purposes only and in doing so I am in no way recommending the organisation involved, as I said it is purely to provide some background information on the matter:-

I would have thought its more about mis-selling of a policy rather than what type of Policy. If you would not have been eligible to claim, then you should have a case which ever Policy you have.

Worth checking although I think its time limited.

I had 2 actual contracts from the 1990's for PPI - but they wouldn't accept them.
Fortunately, I found a few ancient statements - and a credit card statement - and got money back on all of them. Not a lot, but an unexpected 'bonus' :-D

Thank you. It sounds as if its worth the time to fill in the form, and the price of a stamp.

Still can't find the policy, but have found a letter refering to it - it probably got chucked when the loan was paid off.

Apparently, they keep records dating back 6 years, so if you were paying it then, they should have a record of it.
I only had to send them statements as it was over 6 years ago, and had to prove I paid it.

Hi DET its a coincidence that you brought PPI up..

Yesterday I was going through the ins and outs of one of the families in my tree I was digging very deep to find distant cousins,
The family name is pretty distinctive and far from common. Whilst using the family name (I was also using Google to research that particular family name) I came across a fairly well known Insurance company with the same family name,
We did our car insurance via the this company for a few years about 3 years ago but changed companies for a better deal.

Anyway... I was a little intrigued by the company name being the same as the one I was researching.
So I decided to delve into the company to find IF there was any connection family wise.

I was very surprised to find that the said company had been fined over £700,000 for mis-selling PPI .
I was under the impression that it was only the Big Boys (Banks) that were into this scam.

So it looks like a great many insurance companies dealing in all types of insurance coverage (Car, house, contents etc) had their fingers in the pie and not just the Banks.

So it may pay to check other other Items like your Car insurance to see if PPI is included on your policy.

DET if you want I Can give you the www.fsa.gov.uk link to this particular Car insurance company. (its a directive and warning to the Company and it is in pdf form).

Thank you everyone who has contibuted :-)

Never thought that car insurance would also be effected, but we probably don't have anything (or can remember who the insurance was with) to even check.

Once I've got the claim against the Mortgage company sorted and sent, the next one to look at is my personal CC.
