I watched this last night. The first family featured with 16 children, one of those children unmarried and also having had a child I admire their work ethic BUT I would not pay child benefit for any more than 2 children.

The second family featured 11 kids, Father on benefits for 7 years, owns own home and receives a few quid under £40,000 net per annum in benefits and he still wants more offspring, I'd give him the snip! in addition to not paying the child benefit for child 3 upwards.

I feel the same way Sue.

The first family working ,but the father of that second family just beggars belief...what that costs the state and as they increase will cost more and more...there are jobs out there that he could do.he just doesn't want to work.

Felt sorry in a way for his wife..she seemed to be embarassed.

No wonder the neighbours are against them!!

I am an only child and always feel that the space where my own children might have been is as nothing to the yawning chasm where my siblings should have been.

I would have loved to have been a child in one of those families.

If the 2nd family mentioned start to get over the £40,000 p.a. would their child benefit stop as it does with workers who earn more than that?

What channel was this on? I'd be interested in watching it on Iplayer or whatever....

My Mother was one of eighteen children, my Grandmother never went out to paid work, but took in washing and baked and sold her own bread. No family allowances or social benefits. I often wonder what she would say if she saw how things are today.

Depends on what pride and respect you have for your family just how much you want to be reliant on the state,,,,,,2nd one could work and still be helped with some benifits,

our working ancestors just wouldnt belive they could have so many children and didnt need to work,,,,,,,I think many just would not have accepted they couldn't provide for their large families and gone miles doing anything to earn a crust to even not eating themselves.

I also watched this programme, thought benefits were being looked into
and if you didn't work they would be stopped. Why are those on DLA being
hounded to get a job or the threat of their money being stopped even though
they are unable to work. Or have I got that wrong?

What an ignorant and selfish man !!!!!!!! Has absolutely no means to provide for the many children he already has.... living in cramped conditions..with his wife at the end of her tether and still he insists that there is room for more !!!!!!!!!

If he wants more children...good for him...he should go and do as is wife said and do ANYTHING rather than the nothing he is doing now. I shall stop at that even though I could say more where he is concerned.....

The family where the father is the local baker seem lovely. Though I did feel a bit sorry for the eldest daughter trying to control them when the parents went out overnight.........rather her than me !!!!!!

Just think....when those children have their children and so on............something has to be done to change the system.
I was an only child...had 2 myself as that is what we thought we could afford...no benefits.child allowance on 2nd child...can't remember what it was but put it into account for children.
If that man has a degree surely he could get a job...but it possibly wouldn't pay what he gets in benefits.
Personally I would do any sort of job rather than be so lazy as he is.
He can afford to give them money to get new clothes and new furniture and look at the way they are living...they seem to have plenty of clothes around in boxes.

The frightening thing is...they live among us and I can't help but fear for future generations.
My great gran had 13 children and when her husband died...he was about 20 years older ....she married a man with 12....they went to work early in the mills and had to give up their money to household expenses....they had to manage on very little...everyone these days thinks the country owes them a living without some contribution.

Well I have just watched it, thanks for the link Sue, and i am wondering if this is a repeated programme or an update as I have seen these two families before and the 2nd man irritated me just as much this time round.

I agree with Muffy on him being a very selfish man.

Why is the house in such disarray couldn't he tidy it with his wife after all the children go to school I presume so what does he do all day. I felt really sorry for his wife.
