I agree with John's suggestion of Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

I've been a member for years and do have a tree on here and use the boards. I don't use the records on here, much prefer other sites who have a better selection.

PP. It breaks my heart to say this, but I quite like Island's suggestion of Cliquy, Beaky and Geeky. Something like that (thinking out of box) could catch on.

But each Genes package, once they have a name for it, needs to be a solid offer. If 30 years ago, we were asked to spend £2 on a packet of rabbit food, we would have resisted. But call it Alpen, give it a lovely packet and market it hard and it becomes a best selling breakfast cereal.

Must say that having read all this thread through and taking into account all people comments it breaks my heart to agree on any point with John but his suggestion of the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum is really good, especially if our type of membership is added to the bottom of our profile photo.

No comment on the prices as I am only a basic member and if they decide to up my membership I shall be leaving anyway.

:-)

Cliquey - use of community boards

Beaky - a look at some records

Geeky - a look at all records

Here's a flippant suggestion in line with early suggestions on thread:
1. Food Bank
2. Aldi
3. Tesco
and top one
4. Waitrose
May get sponsorship ;-)
Note the Waitrose one is exactly the same as the Tesco offer. It just costs a lot more. (oops - don't mention word "costs")

I have the basic membership.

I had to ask what I would get if I upgraded.

Access to records.

WHAT records?

Not sure how many messages I sent to GR before I got a REAL answer.

Records ~ mainly English.

Some Scottish census records have recently been added, I understand they are transcriptions only.

No thanks, I prefer to see the originals, because I've seen so many errors in transcriptions.

FREE ~ you can build a tree, but not send messages or post on community boards (AND YOU SHOULDN'T BE ABLE TO REPORT POSTS!!). You can reply to messages.

BASIC ~ Build a tree, send and receive messages, post on community boards.

No idea what the other membership levels are, but I'm not interested because they are mainly English records.

A DETAILED description should be given for all membership levels, with the costs.

Whatever Genes call the packages, members need to know exactly what they will get for their money.

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 15 Mar 2013 20:57

maybe one level could be called adolescent - might apply to a certain person or two.
John why not leave the thread now you have made your suggestion? That is all it is asking for!

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 15 Mar 2013 20:50

John is someone trying hard to answer question set by Genes. Who is Carol with numbers and what is she trying to suggest as answer?

That term probably applies to more than that lol

If four basic packages, could be Baby, Child, Parent, Grandparent.

That would be genealogical and all basic members would then be classified as children :-)

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 15 Mar 2013 20:01

That post suggested a description of fees that's all - the thread is not asking for "experts" to actually suggest what is charged.
I am not sure what you mean by "private brainstorm" but still.
Some decent "outside the box" suggestions would be good - maybe even genealogy based.

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 15 Mar 2013 19:48

Errol. Post at 1031 introduced off-topic costs. It was not my post.

Did not realise that your suggestion and next one were to be seriously considered. But "haves" and "have nots" might be catchier than "rip off". Benefit of having your own private brainstorm, I suppose.

Totally agree we should answer thread for package name ideas.

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 15 Mar 2013 19:37

I do believe I made a suggestion in the first response to the OP.
And, John, you were the first to actually start suggesting figures for what should be charged.
(unless you have changed your post of course)
This thread really should be left purely to suggestions for names.

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 15 Mar 2013 19:28

Errol. With respect, I was the one who made a suggestion about names and tried to bring thread back on track. And I was not the one who mentioned costs first. Please be fair and inclusive if you want to criticise - not just carp at me.

What package names have you suggested?

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 15 Mar 2013 19:01

Might I suggest that this thread is about names rather than costs.
I am sure the GR team don't wish to wade through whimsical posts about how much should be charged John
