Misleading to free members, "you can receive messages from other members and reply to them"

Ought to say "you cannnot send messages but you can receive them from paid up members and reply to them"

You take a "Standard" subscription without permission. This seems pretty useless so I have to agree with "rip off standard sub" and "little more than rip off but you can get the information for Platimum free elsewhere". Plain speaking and clear.
Genes Reunited isn't riding high on respect at the moment.

Wow that is amazing.
You used the words Genes Reunited with the respect word all in the same line, never ever seen that done before on here. That is just amazing. :-)

I wonder if anyone at G R actually read these posts. I would suggest that you do something about the site before you lose members. I tried to print off some of my tree only to find it wasnt possible. Why not? Surely it cant be that hard to sort out. You have a lot of disgruntled members at present complaining at the lack of availabity open to them. What is wrong with you. Get it sorted. Roz.

Ian Report 30 Mar 2013 03:05

I have been a member of this site for many years.
First of all I would like to say that this site is definitely value for money.
I have recommended that people interested in starting genealogy use the basic package rather than paying huge monthly and annual fees to other sites.
That said I believe that we should expect to pay more for the basic site so that it allows genesreunited to continue this value for money service. I am now in Australia but I think I still only pay around £20 annually (I am sure someone will advise me if this is totally off the mark). I would happily pay between £30 and £50 annually for this service.
I know that other sites offer more research material but they charge exorbitant fees on an annual basis that makes an interesting hobby unattainable for many people.

The basic is good. Perhaps GR should look at how they could add value to the other services. I have to use Scotland's People and pay £6 for 30 credits which run out very quickly. What I definitely would like is a way to print, in a pleasing format all the data I have researched over the years.

Call the packages

1. Foundation Package (Resource material restricted)
2. Foundation Plus Package (Access to Core Research Material)
3. Foundation Unlimited Package (Access to all records)

I like Ian's suggetion the best yet - Bt as GR put things like this on then forget about it - they won't see it.

So come on Genes What is your opinion of what has been suggested.

Barry

Barry Report 31 Mar 2013 13:29

Ian
I don't know about printing trees in a pleasing format, there has been no printing facility at all for many months, just a promise made about a year ago ,that a "swanky" new one is being developed and that it "shouldn't take too long"
Up to a few months ago one could print ancestors/descendants but that facility has disappeared without trace AND without an explanation as to why

As to the renaming of the packages, GR, true to form , is conspicuous by its absence in responding to any of the suggestions/complaints

After 2 weeks & almost 100 responses, not a flicker from the GR team.
Was it a rhetorical question? :-D :-D :-D

amateur (novice just starting researcher), semi professional( able to spend weekly research time) , professional researcher member(excess of 1000 relatives in tree).
I would also add my comments about the totally unprofessional nature of the IT system. The bugs are effectively costing me time and money as I am having to access records more than once. The search facilities are not very professionally accurate I keep being told a record cannot be found yet it exists. I cannot search my family tree to attach a record as i keep being told that the record does not exist in the family tree when i have just entered it . As I use other systems some of the record search facilities are not of a compatible standard and I use other systems to cross reference to search for records that cannot be found in this system. There is something fundamentally wrong but having spent years auditing systems I have experience to get around systems that do not work as expected. Not everyone has that experience base to fall back on . For the first time user only using this system the failings are costing them money and making their initial searches much more time consuming and sometimes totally unsuccessful even though their search information should yield a positive result .

Just been noting comments concerning ideas to name Genes Reunited membership package deals. Alas, dear members we have a problem.
How about, Novice, for beginners (NB) those who are just that with no knowledge
whatsoever about family history.(G.R. would HAVE to ascertain how much a potential member knew before joining via a mandatory questionnaire)
Limited to 1841 to 1911 census returns and D.B.& Ms from 1837onwards. After 12 months membership the next package could be Intermediate which could apply to those just joining having answered the mandatory questionnaire depending on their knowledge. However such a scheme would defeat the purpose of G.R. of the sharing of knowledge between members when tree details are made available.
Genes Reunited was originally started on that proviso. It is essential to the continuation of G.R. despite the legal commitment to ,"Hidden relative", syndrome
Finally £100 to £250 suggestion for membership would avoid need for any package
Possibility arising of no members. :-0 :-0 :-0 Caldervale

I don't see any point describing the basic package as "novice, new or just starting" you might as well call it "fully experienced, done my tree and don't need to do any more, I'm only here to help or chat" ...that's the thing, NOT using the full records doesn't mean you are 'NEW' to genealogy in any way.

Nor does paying the full whack necessarily mean you 'have a clue' what you're doing
