Detective - that "Hornsby" tea caddy is probably a "Hornsea" Pottery item. The pottery was located at Hornsea on the East Coast - west of Beverley. The pottery ceased manufacturing many years ago so tis possible your tea caddy will appreciate in value. We still visit the site of the pottery as has been a "Free Port" since pottery went bust

When we married in 1970 the 'present list' was not the norm. You just accepted whatever was given. I still have some items - tall water set, Pyrex dishes, breadboard and knife and odd towels, pillowslips etc. The strangest thing or things were not one but three Spong mincers! I passed one to Mum-in-law, another to a friend and kept one. During many moves and upgrading to a food processor mine went.

Mum-in-law, in her 90s, has now given up her home and came to live with us over a year ago. Guess what - I am now the proud possessor of that original Spong mincer! Haven 't the heart to get rid of it!

Was chuffed to bits in 1973 to get two sets of Pyrex casserole dishes - 3 different sizes in a set.

When I and my husband got divorced we had one set each and I have still gone mine and use them at least twice a week.

Still got the saucepans as well.

Wish I had kept the sundae set but gave them to a charity shop many years ago.

I also have the first present my Dad ever bought my Mum - a silver basket with a blue glass bowl in it - for sugar presumably

Ann Cardiff
I have two Welsh blankets. One given to me when we married 42 yrs ago and the other was my mothers so must date from the 1930's sometime.

I still use a lot of things I had when we married. I also still have my parents bread board and pyrex dishes.

I also have lamp bases from the 70's and I dig stuff out when it becomes fashionable again. :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Lot of retro fifties crockery designs around at the moment .
Von
Edit Meant to say that whilst looking through old newspapers I've found lots of lists of wedding presents in the wedding notices

I don't have a bottom drawer but have one with things I will never use. Nice cotton and lace bed linen and old fashioned cotton nightdress. A nod to my mother who always had such items 'in case you had to call the doctor'. Just a little keepsake for me now.

It was coffee and tea sets and lampshades. My mother sent me some lovely blue blankets which I no longer have, Had to go out and buy a frying pan.

I have at this very moment sitting in my kitchen space an 1968 coffee set. Tall coffee pot with geometric design. The only wedding present left. Nowhere to put it but can't bear to give it to charity shop.

Was just saying to my daughter the other day that back in the day some young people were happy to start off with second hand furniture from family. Also where I came from it was the norm if you wanted new to have always a 3 piece suite, dining room set and bedroom suite on the HP and then of course you kept if for years.

It's difficult to remember which were Wedding presents, and those which were 'bottom drawer' purchases or hand-me-downs.

We've certainly got some stainless steel serving dishes, a cheese board and wine glasses. Oh, and a Hornsby? pottery tea caddy.

Our children's generation, from my own observation, don't seem to want hand-me-down furniture when they set up home and would rather buy flat-pack new.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 20 Mar 2013 11:42

Sounds like my list from 1968 Ann :-D

I still have one very good quality blanket, the cutlery, and some stainless steel serving dishes left. apart from that, I think everything else has gone.

We have moved 6 times in 45 years and really had to downsize for retirement, so it was 'bye-bye' to quite a lot of stuff 9 years ago. Our daughter has our 1970's wardrobe, dressing table and tallboy and they really don't looked dated at all.

We hadn't lived together either and were SO proud of every new item we could afford - whether it was second hand or new. We chose everything together - made a few mistakes - but we learned some lessons along the way... :-D

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 20 Mar 2013 11:31

1960 we had several casserole dishes, tablecloths, pillow cases, towels, ironing board, cutlery, steak knives, (still use those), tea pot etc, dinner service, pyrex rolling pin (still use), scales (kitchen), eiderdown and candlewick bedspread, cake knife. several toast racks, saucepan set, water jug and glasses (waterford I think and still have those). iron.

But we had not lived together before marriage so had nothing at all. We easily set up home with the presents which were bought individually, some asked for a list some didn't but there was no store list.
